Mortal Kombat 3 seemed certain until just recently. Now, Mortal Kombat II’s struggling box office means a threequel might not happen.
Mortal Kombat II’s box office makes a third film much less likely
Following a few weeks at the box office, Mortal Kombat II seems to be destined to underperform at box office. The movie already underperformed at its opening weekend, earning just $63 million. While that isn’t a bad number, the film was originally estimated to earn over $80 million. And unfortunately for the film, the further we get from its premiere, the less likely that the film will see substantial returns gets.
This weekend, its second in theaters, Mortal Kombat II landed fourth in rankings, with a 66% drop in its 10-day release. Judging by the film’s current standing, it seems unlikely the film will cross $100 million domestically and will end up being just the second-most successful film in the franchise, behind the1995 movie ($122 million globally). This could have a negative impact on production of a potential third movie.
While the film’s team has already talked about what a third movie looks like, the second movie performing so under projections could throw a wrench in things. Even though the second movie has been received well and fans seem to prefer it to the first, the MK movies have been expensive. It’s unclear if Warner Bros. will want to continue putting out the effort for the movies. A third film has been said to be in development for a year, but that was before this film ended up performing so poorly.
There’s the possibility that an eventual digital and streaming release could lead to more popularity and a subsequent desire for more, though, so fans will have to demonstrate their enthusiasm for the movie with ticket sales and streaming numbers to make sure Warner Bros. knows.
