The underwhelming box-office collection of Masters of the Universe has not only surprised fans but has also drawn a confused reaction from the original He-Man star, Dolph Lundgren. The Swedish actor, who embodied Prince Adam in the 1987 epic, noted in a recent interview that he doesn’t understand why the Nicholas Galitzine-led He-Man movie has done such mediocre business so far.
Dolph Lundgren left ‘disappointed’ by Masters of the Universe’s box-office run
The Aquaman star expressed shock and disappointment regarding the poor box-office return of the recently released He-Man movie.
“I was a bit disappointed,” Dolph Lundgren told ComicBook’s Chris Killian. “I mean, everybody told me it’s going to do great. I’m not a huge believer in looking at the box office and that influencing how I feel that much emotionally about the picture. But I did think about it like, ‘Oh, okay. Um, that was strange that didn’t do better.’ And I don’t know why that is. They did a lot of marketing, they did a lot of press. I was part of it, some of it. I don’t know where it’s at now; I mean, I think it did fairly well overseas as well. I’m not sure what that means, really.”
Released on June 5, 2026, Masters of the Universe opened to $54.3 million during its debut weekend. Since then, the movie has failed to even double its tally, with its current global box-office collection standing at a mere $103.5 million, as per Box Office Mojo.
During the interview, Dolph Lundgren also shared his views on the future of the Travis Knight-helmed Masters of the Universe as a franchise. “Sometimes you have a huge box office hit that becomes a classic, or sometimes it makes a lot of money, but nobody cares 20 years later,” he remarked. “And there’s also the other one, the other version, where it didn’t do that well, but people care a lot, you know, 50 years later.”
