Monster: The Ed Gein Story is arriving on Netflix on October 3, 2025. After much speculation, the third installment in Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan’s Emmy-winning Monster anthology is finally arriving this Fall. Charlie Hunnam stars as Ed Gein, one of America’s most notorious killers. His disturbing crimes shocked 1950s rural Wisconsin and inspired some of the most iconic horror films in history (via Netflix Tudum).
Netflix has also released teaser posters. The poster highlights Gein’s eerie influence that inspired classic horrors like Psycho, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, and The Silence of the Lambs. The Monster series has become a major streaming success since its debut. Season 1, Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, earned Evan Peters a Primetime Emmy Award. Season 2, Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, focused on the infamous brothers convicted of murdering their parents.
What is Monster: The Ed Gein Story About?

The series follows Ed Gein, a serial killer, grave robber, and a “psycho.” Set in 1950s rural Wisconsin, Ed Gein lived as a quiet, unassuming recluse until authorities uncovered the horrors hidden inside his farmhouse. His horrifying acts of murder, grave robbery, and body mutilation revealed a home full of unspeakable horrors.
Gein’s obsession with his dead mother and descent into madness made him the real-life blueprint for fictional killers. The show explores how Gein’s crimes redefined American horror and exposed the psychological roots behind his actions. The official synopsis reads:
Driven by isolation, psychosis and all consuming obsession with his mother Gein’s perverse crimes birth a new kind of Monster that would hunt Hollywood for decades.
The true-crime anthology explores how an ordinary man from Plainfield became a cultural monster and how society helped create him.
Who Is in the Cast of Monster: The Ed Gein Story?
Sons of Anarchy star Charlie Hunnam takes on the lead role of Ed Gein. Lady Bird fame Laurie Metcalf plays Augusta Gein, Ed’s mother, whose influence is central to the story. Red Rocket star Suzanna Son appears as Adeline Watkins, a fictional character tied to Gein’s dark world.
The ensemble cast also features Tom Hollander as Alfred Hitchcock, Olivia Williams as Alma Reville, Vicky Krieps as Ilse Koch, Lesley Manville as Bernice Worden, and Joey Pollari as Anthony Perkins. The supporting roles include Tyler Jacob Moore as Sheriff Schley, Mimi Kennedy as Dr. Mildred Newman, Charlie Hall as Deputy Worden, Will Brill as Tobe Hooper, and Robin Weigert as Enid Watkins.
Murphy, Brennan, Hunnam, Max Winkler, Eric Kovtun, Nissa Diederich, Scott Robertson, Louise Shore, and Carl Franklin produce the series. Brennan also writes and directs two episodes, while Winkler directs the remaining six (Via Variety).
Following the release of Monster: The Ed Gein Story, Netflix has already greenlit season 4, focused on Lizzie Borden. Ella Beatty will star as Borden, the infamous Massachusetts woman accused of murdering her father and stepmother in 1892.
