This official two-part novel describes the journey of Ace and how he found his Devil Fruit. In the first volume of the novel, Ace is shipwrecked on an island with Masked Deuce when they come upon Mera Mera no Mi. Since both are starving, they decide to eat the fruit together. Both bit into it at the same time, but Ace ended up getting the powers of the Devil Fruit.

According to Eiichiro Oda, once someone takes a bite of the Devil Fruit its ability becomes theirs from that moment onwards. Thus, Ace must have eaten the fruit a split second before Deuce because it is practically impossible to eat something at the same time. Thus, Ace got away with his newfound powers while Deuce was left with a disgusting Devil Fruit aftertaste in his mouth. (Turns out the fruits taste horrible)
Why Can’t Multiple People Gain Powers from a Single Devil Fruit?

Let’s just say a whole fraternity of people wielding the same powers would get boring very quickly. Once a bite has been taken out of a Devil Fruit, its powers are drained and integrated into the user’s system. The only way to receive the same powers as another person is when they die, in which case, the Devil Fruit will reappear again. This has been proven by Sabo, who eats the Mera Mera no Mi fruit two years after Ace’s death.
One Piece prefers to have the originality of only one user of a Devil Fruit at a time. Even when two people have eaten the same Devil Fruits at different points in time, the way they use it can be vastly different based on their skill set and personality. Of course, some extremely similar Devil Fruits do exist, but in that case, one of them is superior to the other.

For example, Akainu’s Magu Magu no Mi is superior to Ace’s Mera Mera no Mi. Monet’s Yuki Yuki no Mi is not as powerful as Aokiji’s Hie Hie no Mi. The most hilarious examples are the Ton Ton no Mi and Kiro Kiro no Mi (Kilo Kilo no Mi). While Kiro Kiro no Mi allows its user to change their weight from 1 to 10,000 kgs, the Ton Ton no Mi user can become much heavier since it’s a bigger unit of measurement.
