Helldivers 2 Design Director Niklas Malmborg may have just given fans the most promising non-answer yet during the latest Democratic Conversation developer Q&A. When asked directly about the possibility of fighting shoulder-to-shoulder with Super Earth Armed Forces in trench warfare scenarios, he didn’t say no.
Instead, we got classic Arrowhead diplomacy. He acknowledged that the game’s universe “puts it out there that this should be able to happen,” while steering well clear of confirming anything concrete.
In other words, he gave the kind of answer that gets dissected in Reddit threads for days, assuming the community isn’t too busy roasting Arrowhead for something else that week:
The question got to the heart of what a lot of Helldivers 2 players have been waiting for: full-scale, cinematic frontline missions where Helldivers fight as part of a larger war machine, not just elite squads exclusively running sabotage missions behind enemy lines.

Malmborg chose his words carefully. The lore already includes SEAF holding defensive lines while Helldivers handle the precise, high-risk strikes. Connecting those dots into full-scale battles feels inevitable, according to his logic:
Should that be able to happen at some point? Yeah, probably. Do we know exactly when? Maybe internally!
That nervous laugh that followed “maybe internally” did more heavy lifting than any PR statement could, though. Either Arrowhead has plans brewing or Malmborg just accidentally promised something the team hasn’t greenlit yet. Both scenarios sound entirely plausible.
Malmborg expanded with what sounds a lot like internal alignment:
When you look at the universe and the promise of the Helldivers universe, we want to at some point in time be able to deliver most of the things that the universe promises.
So, trench warfare may not be happening tomorrow, but the studio at least recognizes that players have wanted full-scale battles since the day SEAF NPCs became active allies in missions. Seeing five Super Earth grunts defending a bunker was enough to make players ask for fifty doing the same on an actual front.
Why This Matters More Than Another Warbond Release

Helldivers 2 excels at making players feel expendable yet elite simultaneously, but the current mission structure keeps that power fantasy contained. Four Helldivers destroying bot fabricators feels tactically satisfying, but not exactly cinematically overwhelming. The scale hinted at in the Galactic War often gets lost in the repetition of small-squad objectives.
Frontline missions could change that. Fighting alongside SEAF conscripts, watching waves of undemocratic enemies crash into dug-in human defenses, and calling down orbital strikes across an actual battlefield would bring the spectacle this game constantly teases but never quite shows.
More than anything, it would finally draw a visual line between elite Helldivers and the even more disposable troops they’re supposedly leading the charge for.
Would you like to see Arrowhead put resources into large-scale mission types like this? Does trench warfare feel worth the time it would take to get right? Let us know in the comments.
