Everything that could go wrong did go wrong in the latest Tougen Anki episode 19. But it’s fair, since we already had an idea of how things would turn out. Still, it was a surprise how it managed to hook me. Sooner or later, Mikado and Shiki were bound to find out each other’s truth, but the way it happened in this episode was kind of brutal.
Shinya’s setup worked perfectly, but again, it was way too predictable and didn’t really bring anything new. Still, the way he used his ability to corner Shiki, twisting his good intentions to save others and presenting them to Mikado as if he were the killer – that was rough. From a close friend’s perspective, that would hurt so much.
If Both Lied, Why Mikado Thinks He’s Any Better
Both of them lied to each other in one way or another. Mikado hid his identity as a Momotaro and told Shiki he was just a cop, while Shiki basically did the same – he just didn’t mention that he’s an Oni.
Other than that, there wasn’t really any lying involved. And now, after seeing Shiki in a situation like that, no running, no blood, just sitting there in agony, that alone was enough to convince Mikado?
Surely, this is one of those cliché storytelling tropes where even the closest friend loses trust the moment something small happens. In fact, if stuff like this happened in real life, I’d seriously question humanity. Like, have at least some faith in your own judgment when it comes to the person right in front of you, unless you have clear evidence.
Still, we can’t change what the episode gave us. Shinya’s plan was foolproof, sure, but it only worked because he’s surrounded by characters who don’t think things through. After this incident, I honestly have to say Mikado could use a bit more sense and not just blindly believe whatever his boss tells him.
The Climactic Shiki vs Mikado Fight Will Be Insane

Sure, it’ll be a visual spectacle, but more than that, the weight of the episode will be heavy. The philosophical POV that Mudano presented in the latest Tougen Anki episode was actually pretty insightful.
It’s fair that Shiki still doesn’t want to fight someone he still considers his best friend, but as Mudano said, if Shiki wants Mikado to listen, he has to force his words through. And how will he do that?
By becoming stronger. Because apparently, the weak listen to the strong, and that’s how it’s always been, even in real life, in most cases. So I’ve gotta give some credit to the episode’s storytelling. It kept me hooked, even though I was annoyed most of the time by the characters’ decisions.
Basically, this episode felt like one of those classic scenarios where, for the sake of the narrative, the story stays engaging despite everything. And in the next episode, I really hope we finally get the fight that’s been teased since the start of this second half of the anime.
