Marvel Studios’ recently released Thunderbolts* may have been received well by fans and critics alike, but a new report from Variety suggests the film was not profitable for the company.
What are Thunderbolts*’ box office returns?
According to a new report from Variety, Thunderbolts* needed somewhere around $425 million to be considered breaking even, a figure that the movie will likely not reach. Currently having made $377 million, that means the film has potentially lost somewhere around $50 million.
The reason for the drop in box office return, according to some analysts, is due to a variety of factors. Fandango’s movie analytics director Shawn Robbins told THR that “Marvel’s calculus” is different, and that they don’t expect every movie to hit $1 billion anymore.
Exhibitor Relations analyst Jeff Bock also said that the movie only staying in theaters for a month likely led to the underwhelming box office performance.
“These lower-tier comic book movies aren’t cinematic slam dunks anymore,” said Bock. “‘Thunderbolts*’ wrapping up after just a month in theaters is also a concern. These films aren’t legging out like previous iterations.”

Despite the low box office, Marvel Studios’ doesn’t seem too concerned. The report notes that the company often uses every movie as its own marketing tool for the larger MCU, and can make back some of its money later down the line with things like merchandising, Disney+ streaming, theme parks, and more.
Marvel Studios Thunderbolts* was released in theaters earlier this month. Directed by Jake Schreier, the film stars Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier, Wyatt Russell as John Walker/U.S. Agent, Olga Kurylenko as Antonia Dreykov/Taskmaster, Lewis Pullman as Bob Reynolds/Sentry, Geraldine Viswanathan as Mel, Wendell Pierce as Gary, David Harbour as Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, in addition to John-Kamen.
