A manga from the late 1990s has found an unexpected second life on streaming, proving that a good corporate drama does not always need a flashy premise to stay relevant. Nozaki Shuhei – Auditor of Bank, starring Yuji Oda, has climbed back into Netflix Japan’s Top 10 years after its original 2018 run.
The live-action drama is based on Ryouka Shuu and Shigeru Noda’s manga Kansayaku Nozaki Shuhei, with volume 1 published by Shueisha in 1999 (via Comic Vine). Its mix of banking corruption, workplace politics, and a straightforward hero still feels surprisingly easy to connect with today.
Yuji Oda’s Nozaki Shuhei Still Ranks in Netflix Japan’s Top 10
The biggest reason this older drama is getting attention again is simple: it is actually competing with much newer shows. According to FlixPatrol’s September 11, 2026 Netflix Japan chart, Nozaki Shuhei – Auditor of Bank sits at No. 7 among TV shows, moving up three places from the previous ranking (via FlixPatrol). It had also spent two days on the chart at that point.

That is an impressive result for a 2018 drama, especially when the same Top 10 includes current hits such as Badly in Love, Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation, Vivant, and several others. Even more interestingly, its 2020 sequel, Nozaki Shuhei President of Bank, is also sitting at No. 10.
The renewed interest makes sense because the drama has the kind of story that can age well. Instead of relying on romance or spectacle, it focuses on workplace pressure, money, power, and the struggle to do the right thing when an entire organization is against one person. Yuji Oda also gives Nozaki the right balance of warmth and stubbornness, making him feel more like a real salaryman than an exaggerated hero.
Nozaki Shuhei Brings a Powerful Corporate Battle From Manga to TV
The story takes place during Japan’s difficult post-bubble period. Shuhei Nozaki is a branch manager at the fictional Oozora Bank. He is respected by the people around him because he cares more about his employees and customers than office politics.

That attitude, however, has not helped his career. After his branch is closed, Nozaki unexpectedly gets a new position as a corporate auditor at the bank’s headquarters. This gives him a chance to look much deeper into the company’s problems. What he finds is far worse than expected. Nozaki discovers corruption, questionable financing, and problems hidden inside the bank. His new job puts him in direct conflict with powerful executives who have plenty to lose if the truth comes out.
The setup makes the drama especially interesting because the conflict is not about who can throw the strongest punch. Nozaki’s weapons are his position, his sense of justice, and his willingness to keep digging. Every document and every decision can become part of the fight.
The series premiered on January 14, 2018, and ran for eight episodes. Alongside Oda, the main cast includes Nanako Matsushima, Goro Kishitani, and Ikko Furuya. Matsushima’s involvement was also notable because she reunited with Oda 17 years after they appeared together in the 2000 film Whiteout.
The story did not end with the first series either. A sequel titled Todori Nozaki Shuhei, also known internationally as Nozaki Shuhei President of Bank, arrived in 2020 and continued Nozaki’s journey after he became the bank’s president. The manga’s influence also reached South Korea, where it was adapted into the 2019 drama The Banker. With both live-action Nozaki Shuhei series now appearing in Netflix Japan’s Top 10, the renewed interest feels well deserved.
