Written by Sixteen years after The Social Network, actor-writer Aaron Sorkin is back with a new iteration, one focused on the history Facebook tried to keep buried. The Social Reckoning, which Sorkin describes as a David-and-Goliath story, is not directly connected to the original but instead serves as a companion piece. It draws on real-life leaked Facebook documents and chronicles The Facebook Files, The Wall Street Journal series that exposed the platform’s internal harm, as well as Facebook’s awareness of, and efforts to cover up, that harm.
The first trailer is out now, and it instantly establishes the film’s stakes.

All You Need To Know About The Social Reckoning
In the trailer, we see Jeremy Strong’s Zuckerberg preparing to testify before Congress after Frances Haugen leaks confidential documents to journalist Jeff Horwitz. “I’m not two years out of a dorm room anymore,” he says, while also identifying himself as a “free speech absolutist,” a statement that resonates very differently in 2026 than it might have in 2016.
Sony Pictures Releasing announced a wide release date of October 9, 2026, with a festival premiere expected beforehand.
Sorkin is wearing two hats on this film, serving as both writer and director. His directorial debut was the 2017 biographical drama Molly’s Game.
Development began in June 2025, while principal photography started in October 2025 and wrapped in December 2025 in Vancouver, Canada. The casting is arguably the most debated aspect of the film.
Jeremy Strong (Succession), who was nominated for an Oscar for The Apprentice, takes over the role of Zuckerberg from Jesse Eisenberg, who also earned an Oscar nomination for the original. When asked by The Hollywood Reporter whether he had spoken to Eisenberg about it, Strong was unambiguous: “It has nothing to do with what I’m going to do.” Strong has not been shy about the material, calling it “one of the great scripts I’ve ever read” and saying that it “speaks to our time” and “touches the third rail of everything happening in our world.”
Mikey Madison, Best Actress winner for Sean Baker’s Anora, plays Haugen. Her line at the start of the trailer encapsulates the entire premise of the film: “I don’t want to be made an example of by a guy with unlimited resources.” The journalist who received those documents from Haugen is played by Jeremy Allen White (The Bear).
The cast is rounded out by Betty Gilpin, Wunmi Mosaku (Oscar nominee for Sinners), Billy Magnussen, and Bill Burr.
The Social Network grossed $224 million worldwide in 2010 and won three Oscars, including Best Adapted Screenplay for Sorkin.
The Social Reckoning arrives weighed down by that legacy and by a plot that, in Sorkin’s own words, feels ripped straight from the fault lines of the present.
