Ned Sampson spends The Paper Season 2 trying to prove that the Toledo Truth Teller’s success was no fluke, and by the finale, he has almost bitten off more than his scrappy newsroom can chew. Ned’s secret relationship with Mare Pritti damages his professional standing, while his reckless Glass Club investigation is what truly puts the Toledo Truth Teller in danger. Episode 9, Who’s Marv Marving?, had already left Ned scrambling to protect Mare from nasty rumors while Marv and Ann went undercover to help his investigation.
The finale, The NS Board, brings those threads crashing together: Ned and Detrick finally have their big story, but publishing it demands a sacrifice, while Mare has to decide how badly she wants a career in the “big leagues.” I don’t think the ending tells us Ned has saved the Truth Teller yet. What it does show is a man finally learning that saving a newspaper may require surrendering his ego before it consumes the very thing he wants to protect.
Why Ned And Mare’s Secret Relationship Becomes A Professional Nightmare

The Paper Season 1 ended with Ned and Mare finally kissing after the Ohio Journalism Awards, but Season 2 wastes little time pushing them into an actual relationship. There is one glaring snag: Ned is Mare’s editor-in-chief. Keeping the romance under wraps soon becomes a losing battle. Marv learns about them by The Paper Season 2 Episode 6, after which Mare temporarily moves to the better-resourced Cincinnati Chronicle. By The Paper Season 2 Episode 9, rumors about Mare are ricocheting around the workplace, forcing Ned into damage-control mode.
The exposed romance creates a serious conflict for Ned because he is Mare’s editor-in-chief, but it is not what threatens the Truth Teller’s survival. It mainly gives management another reason to question his judgment. He is making consequential editorial calls while secretly dating one of his reporters. Even if the relationship is sincere, that is an HR headache wearing a press badge. Mare’s stint in Cincinnati then exposes a nastier problem for their future. She gets a glimpse of a newsroom with greater resources and opportunities, while the Truth Teller remains held together by ambition, volunteer reporters and what sometimes feels like industrial-strength optimism.
Greg Daniels described the Cincinnati Chronicle as being “a level above Toledo in professionalism and resources.” So when Mare faces another career choice in the finale, staying with Ned is no longer a cute workplace-romance decision.
Can Ned Save The Truth Teller: What Does Finale Mean For The Paper Season 3?

Ned’s Glass Club crusade has been his white whale all season. After the Truth Teller’s awards haul, he wants another story big enough to prove himself, even forming a secret investigative team after being told he cannot pursue one lead. Peacock describes The Paper Season 2 Episode 8, Secret Team, as Ned continuing an important story after being ordered off it. By The NS Board, that investigation has reached publication territory. Ned and Detrick have the story, but there is a price attached. More importantly, Ned finally stops treating the scoop like a trophy with his name engraved on it. Current finale breakdowns report that he gives Mare access to the investigation, allowing the story he spent much of the season chasing to become an opportunity for her as well.
For me, that is Ned’s real The Paper Season 2 victory. He cannot magically fix the Truth Teller’s finances, erase the workplace mess surrounding Mare, or guarantee the paper’s survival. What he can do is become a less reckless editor. Choosing the story and Mare’s professional respect over personal credit is a decent first step. The finale deliberately leaves Mare’s future open. Cincinnati can offer her something Toledo currently cannot, while staying would mean continuing to build the Truth Teller alongside Ned. The romance survives as a possibility rather than receiving a tidy sitcom bow.
And there is encouraging news behind the scenes. Peacock has not officially ordered The Paper Season 3 as of September 9, 2026, but Daniels told Parade that he and Michael Koman have already opened the writers’ room and begun discussing unused stories. That makes the finale feel less like an obituary for the Truth Teller and more like a warning shot. Ned may still save the paper, but after Season 2, I’d wager his biggest obstacle is no longer money, management, or the Glass Club.
So, can Ned save the Truth Teller? The real danger comes from his Glass Club crusade, which involves powerful local interests and advertisers.
