Star Wars: The Mandalorian & Grogu just hit a box office wall that no one saw coming. The latest numbers reveal a sharp second-weekend decline that could jeopardize the film’s path to profitability.

The Mandalorian and Grogu faces an almost 70% drop at second weekend

Star Wars: The Mandalorian & Grogu is facing a steep box office decline in its second weekend, dropping nearly 70% from its opening frame. The film earned an estimated $25 million in its second weekend, falling from its $81.6 million debut, according to Box Office Mojo. The sharp decline raises further questions about whether the Star Wars spinoff can reach profitability during its theatrical run.

The second-weekend performance also saw the film slip to third place at the domestic box office. Two horror films overtook the Star Wars entry, marking an unusual defeat for the franchise. The drop follows earlier concerns about the film’s ability to generate enough revenue to break even at the box office.

Those close to Disney’s decision-making have indicated the film needs between $500 million and $600 million globally to land in the black, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The Mandalorian & Grogu currently sits at approximately $246.5 million worldwide after two weekends in theaters. The film still has a significant gap to close before reaching its break-even threshold.

International numbers remain a persistent concern for the Jon Favreau-directed film. The overseas gross currently makes up roughly 44% of the worldwide total at $109.2 million. Comparable blockbusters typically split their earnings evenly between domestic and international markets. The relatively soft overseas performance could make reaching the upper $600 million break-even target particularly challenging for Disney.

Competition will only intensify in the coming weeks as several major releases enter theaters. Masters of the Universe, Scary Movie, Disclosure Day, Toy Story 5, and Supergirl all arrive throughout June. Audiences have responded favorably to the film with an 88% Rotten Tomatoes audience score, but the crowded summer slate leaves The Mandalorian & Grogu fighting for shrinking screen space during a highly competitive season.
