In the last batch of episodes of The Legend of Vox Machina, Pike Trickfoot and Grog lost Wilhand Trickfoot to the Children of the Truth. It was also revealed that Delilah Briarwood was the “Necro Ninja” who blinded Keyleth’s father during her coronation. Picking up from there, Episode 7 delved deep into what the Briarwoods were actually up to when they overthrew the de Rollo family. After that, Vox Machina finally reunited with the last member of the team who had so far been absent: Scanlan Shorthalt.
The latest batch of episodes ends on quite a cliffhanger, with Grog, played by Critical Role Productions CEO Travis Willingham, being turned to dust after getting too close to one of the magical spheres that the Children of the Truth use to travel. Pike, having just lost Wilhand Trickfoot the day before, is left devastated and chases after Delilah and the Unalive Five to exact her vengeance with Mythcarver.

Episode 7: The Ghosts of Whitestone — Vox Machina Regroups
The Ghosts of Whitestone is an episode in which Percy, Vex, Vax, and Keyleth discover what exactly is going on in Whitestone Castle. Delilah and Sylas Briarwood had free rein over the place while they were in charge, prompting them to add new sections to the castle, mostly so Delilah could conduct experiments aimed at curing Sylas’s illness.
The group is immediately separated when they enter the booby-trapped lab. Delilah appears with the purpose of gathering some equipment, only to encounter Vox Machina. Percy, still deeply traumatized from his first encounter with the Briarwoods, relies on his friends to help beat them back.
The episode ends with Grog and Pike returning and telling the rest of the team about Wilhand’s death. Keyleth also finds a rare flower that she hopes to revive in a bid to save Vax’s life, as his disease now seems to be progressing at an exponential rate. The team sets out to look for Scanlan with the express purpose of acquiring Mythcarver.
Episode 8: The Bard’s Lament — To The Chateau Shorthalt!

The Bard’s Lament in the original actual play was a watershed moment for Scanlan. However, because he had already left with Kaylie, having him deliver the speech did not have nearly the same impact that it did in the actual play. Furthermore, because Scanlan did not rejoin the group, the immediate reconciliation during the battle further weakened one of the most iconic moments of Campaign One. Regardless, this episode sees Scanlan, now thoroughly out of shape, reconcile with Pike after a year of no contact, giving her Mythcarver after rescuing it from one of the Whispered One’s lackeys.
This episode might have been an odd one to focus on Pike, given that The Bard’s Lament is largely Scanlan’s time to shine. However, it may be fitting that Scanlan does not get to be the star of his own episode either, echoing the feelings surrounding his character in the actual play series.
Episode 9: The Temple of Truth — Is Grog Strongjaw Dead?
The Temple of Truth sees Grog Strongjaw reduced to dust by the sphere the Children of Truth had at the temple. Given that Pike had just lost Wilhand in the previous episode, there is little she now cares about other than taking vengeance on Delilah Briarwood and her fellow cronies. Grog’s disintegration has already drawn comparisons from fans to the ending of Infinity War, in which a number of characters were similarly “blipped” by Thanos.
With Vax’s worsening illness and Grog’s sudden disappearance, the fate of Vox Machina seems uncertain. While the rest of the team was able to escape the collapsing temple, Pike walked in after the cultists. Now, she is likely at the Whispered One’s home base, and as far as the characters know, Grog is dead. Vax’s illness is also growing increasingly worse, though Keyleth may have found a cure.
What was especially interesting in this batch of episodes was the contrasting arcs Delilah and Keyleth find themselves on. Throughout these developments, both women share the same goal, but they pursue it in very different ways. It is an effective way of making Delilah sympathetic while still preserving her evil nature, while Keyleth shows the audience what Delilah might have been like if she had been a good person.
