HBO has added a familiar face from the DC universe to The Last of Us Season 3. The award-winning drama continues to expand its world with an entirely original character. His screen credits range from Boys Don’t Cry and Shattered Glass to blockbusters including Green Lantern and The Batman. He made his Broadway debut in a 2008 revival of Chekhov’s The Seagull.
The Last of Us Season 3 adds original character as HBO expands cast
Peter Sarsgaard, a two-time Emmy nominee, has joined The Last of Us Season 3 cast in the recurring role of Amon. He will play one of the leaders of The Seraphites, the religious cult introduced to viewers during the second season (via Deadline).
Amon is a creation of the television series. The character does not appear in the 2013 original game, its 2020 sequel, or any of the companion stories that flesh out the franchise’s world. Showrunner Craig Mazin, now operating without co-showrunner Neil Druckmann for the first time, has pushed the narrative into territory the games never explored.
The Seraphites are locked in a grinding fight with the Washington Liberation Front, a militarised group led by Isaac, played by Jeffrey Wright. The W.L.F. dismissively calls the cult members “Scars,” a reference to the deliberate slashes that mark their faces. As Season 3 shifts its focus to Abby Anderson’s journey through Seattle, the inner workings of the Seraphites will become known.
Sarsgaard’s casting announcement came as The Last of Us Season 3 entered a planned production pause. Filming in Vancouver has halted for roughly a month. The break is because of the FIFA World Cup. Vancouver is one of those host cities.
Cameras are expected to roll again later in the year, with filming continuing through the end of 2026. HBO head Casey Bloys has pointed to a 2027 premiere, though the network has not set an official date.
