Top 2025 superhero films ranked by box office results
The highest-grossing superhero films of 2025 are, from highest to lowest, Superman, The Fantastic Four: First Steps, Captain America: Brave New World, and Thunderbolts*.
Here’s where each of these four superhero films fit in the list of the highest-grossing movies this year at the box office worldwide (so far):
Ne Zha 2 – $1.90 billion
Lilo & Stitch – $1.03 billion
A Minecraft Movie – $957 million
Jurassic World: Rebirth – $861 million
How to Train Your Dragon – $633 million
F1: The Movie – $621 million
Superman – $614 million
Mission: Impossible: The Final Reckoning – $598 million
The Fantastic Four: First Steps – $515 million
Captain America: Brave New World – $415 million
Thunderbolts* – $382 million
We should note that Superman and The Fantastic Four: First Steps are still in theaters at the time of writing, so their numbers are expected to increase. But it likely won’t grow by much as they are in the final weeks of their theatrical release window at this point in time.
Looking deeper into these numbers, these four films have had a harder time at the international box office compared to superhero movies five or ten years ago. Much of this dip is due to their lack of sales in China, as opposed to other blockbusters like Jurassic World: Rebirth and F1: The Movie. James Gunn explained in July that Superman (and by extension the superhero genre) is struggling overseas because of “a certain amount of anti-American sentiment around the world right now.”
On the flipside, domestically in the US and Canada, the four Marvel and DC superhero movies rank much higher on the list of highest-grossing films in 2025:
A Minecraft Movie – $423,9 million
Lilo & Stitch – $423.6 million
Superman – $353 million
Jurassic World: Rebirth – $339 million
Sinners – $278 million
The Fantastic Four: First Steps – $270 million
How to Train Your Dragon – $262 million
Captain America: Brave New World – $200 million
Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning – $197 million
Thunderbolts* – $190 million
Several honorable mentions in the superhero (or at least superhero-ish) genre include the animated film Dog Man ($145 million worldwide, $97 million domestic), M3GAN 2.0 ($39 million worldwide, $24 million domestic), and The Toxic Avenger ($3.2 million worldwide, $2.8 million domestic).
One film releasing in September that will likely upset the worldwide box office rankings is Demon Slayer Infinity Castle, which has already made over $300 million worldwide and is primed to go over the $500 million mark if projections hold for its release in North America, South America, and Europe. It probably won’t impact the domestic rankings as the film is predicted to be front-loaded by fans of the anime series, but it is expected to continue breaking records for an anime film on a global scale.
Looking at the rest of the movie release schedule in 2025, a couple of films that is expected to place high on the list globally or domestically are Wicked: For Good (November 21), Zootopia 2 (November 26), Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 (December 5), and Avatar: Fire and Ash (December 19). The first Wicked movie in 2024 made over $756 million worldwide and $473 million domestically, while Avatar: The Way of Water in 2022 grossed over $2.3 billion worldwide and $684 billion domestically. So their upcoming sequels are predicted to break the box office too.
As such, we’ll update these rankings as we head toward the end of the year, so expect some shakeups before 2025 is through.
