The Swamp Thing release date is quickly becoming a big talking point as the revamped DCU continues to expand under the watchful eyes of James Gunn. The movie, confirmed by Gunn, will bring the fan-favorite DC Comics character to the big screen for the first time since 1989. Given the craze surrounding the film, here’s everything you need to know regarding Swamp Thing and its release date.
What is the Swamp Thing release date estimate?
The Swamp Thing release date estimate is 2028, at the earliest. This is based on the scarce but recent updates provided by James Gunn about the project.
Despite announcing the movie years ago, with Gunn confirming its place in DCU’s Chapter 1: Gods & Monsters, DC Studios has failed to share any substantial information regarding the progress on Swamp Thing. Moreover, James Mangold, who is writing and directing the film, has long been occupied with several other projects, including an untitled Star Wars movie.
Nevertheless, James Gunn provided a slight ray of hope for the project during a July 2025 interview, where he stated, “We talked to James the other day. No, he hasn’t delivered a script, he’s been distracted with his billions of movies. But we’re talking about it again.”
The DC co-CEO’s statements suggest that while Swamp Thing may not be a priority for him at the moment, the project remains alive on the back burner. With Gunn recently confirming the 2027 release date of Man of Tomorrow, it seems highly unlikely that Swamp Thing will come out around the same period.
As such, a 2028 premiere looks like the most optimistic outcome for the film.
Swamp Thing news and updates
So far, neither DC Studios nor James Gunn has shared any information regarding the cast, plot, or production of Swamp Thing.
However, Gunn had previously noted that the movie will draw inspiration from Alan Moore’s Absolute Swamp Thing Vol. 1, which first came out in 1985.
The movie’s confirmed crew includes James Mangold, who comes in as the writer and director for Swamp Thing. Although the film has yet to cast any actor, Daredevil: Born Again star Vincent D’Onofrio has expressed interest in playing the titular character.
While DC Studios has not shared an official summary for the project as of yet, Mangold has described the film as a “simple, clean Gothic horror about this man/monster.”
During an earlier interview with MovieWeb, the Logan director explained, “While I’m sure DC views Swamp Thing as a franchise, [I’m] just doing my own thing with this, just a standalone. I’m not that interested in being handcuffed by so much lore at this point that it’s almost immovable and you can’t please anybody.”
The synopsis for Swamp Thing is as follows:
“A film set within the Chapter One: Gods and Monsters phase of the DC Universe (DCU), focusing on the titular character of Swamp Thing and exploring the mud-water creature’s dark origins.”
