DC co-CEO James Gunn revealed a significant detail about the wings of Hawkgirl, played by Isabela Merced, who will appear in Superman. The upcoming movie is all set to hit the theaters on July 11, 2025, kicking off the first chapter: Gods and Monsters of the new DC universe. Starring David Corenswet, Nicholas Hoult, Rachel Brosnahan, Isabela Merced, Nathan Fillion, and more, Superman is one of the most anticipated movies of this year.
James Gunn confirms Hawkgirl will have organic wings in Superman
The Superman director was back to answering fan queries on the social media platform, Threads, and clarified a big detail regarding Hawkgirl’s wings in the movie.
On Threads, a user recently mentioned James Gunn and asked, “r hawkgirls wings in the Superman trailer organic or mechanical because it hard to tell for me.” The director, after a few days gap, stepped in with an answer and disclosed that Hawkgirl’s wings are indeed “Organic.”
This characteristic of the live-action Hawkgirl, also known as Kendra Saunders, is similar to the details shown in the comics. Saunders made her debut in the comics in 1999 in the first issue of JSA: Secret Files and Origins. In the comics, Hawkgirl’s wings are organic and made of the Nth metal. Previously, Hawkman, portrayed by Aldis Hodge, appeared in the DCEU in the 2022 movie Black Adam.
Talking about her portrayal of Hawkgirl in Superman, Isabela Merced told Collider in April 2024, “I would be honored for people to see me on the street and just be like, ‘Hawkgirl!’ They don’t need know my name… These characters mean so much to other people, I’m just happy that I could potentially hold a special place in their heart. I don’t care what it’s for or what I’ve done. As long as it means something to them, I’m very excited about that.”
