After six movies, including three solo outings, Marvel fans will finally see Tom Holland’s Spider-Man acting like his comic-book counterpart in Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
The MCU finally lets Spider-Man be Spider-Man
While Holland has largely received praise from the Marvel fandom for his performance as Peter Parker/Spider-Man, the characterization of the superhero has not been without criticism. A lot of the negative reception has to do with Spider-Man’s over-reliance on Tony Stark and his technology, as well as Uncle Ben’s absence from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Marvel Studios and Sony don’t seem all that interested in bringing Uncle Ben to the MCU, with Aunt May serving as a stand-in for his “great power comes great responsibility” speech. However, after Doctor Strange was forced to erase everyone’s memories of Peter Parker at the end of Spider-Man: No Way Home, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige confirmed to Empire that this means that Brand New Day can finally incorporate some classic elements of the character into the MCU.
“It is the first Spider-Man film that we’ve made in the MCU that is focused on the classic elements of Spider-Man,” Feige said. “He’s doing the Spidey thing of living in a rather sad, small apartment, listening to the police scanner and going out and using his great power responsibly.”
With no friends to turn to and Aunt May and Tony Stark no longer alive in the MCU, Brand New Day director Destin Daniel Cretton shared with Empire that the movie begins with Peter “dedicating his entire existence to his job” as Spider-Man.
“That’s the core theme that I find incredibly relatable. I think most people at certain points in our lives have gone through loss. At least for me, and I think for many people, the result can be: ‘Screw it. I’m just going to work. I’m going to do nothing else but work.’ That’s obviously not the most healthy state,” the filmmaker added.
Besides Holland, Spider-Man: Brand New Day stars Zendaya, Sadie Sink, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal, Tramell Tillman, Michael Mando, and Mark Ruffalo, among others. The Sony/Marvel movie will hit theaters on July 31, 2026, as part of Phase 6 of the MCU.
