Written by Sony Pictures has officially won a highly competitive studio bidding war to secure the rights for Hollow, a seductive, high-concept supernatural horror reboot starring Sydney Sweeney. Based on the upcoming debut gothic novel by filmmaker Lindsey Anderson Beer who is also locked in to write, direct, and produce the feature film, the project marks a massive modern reimagining of Washington Irving’s classic 1820 short story, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Shifting the lens, the psychological thriller will revolve around a fiercely independent Katrina Van Tassel, portrayed by Sweeney. The story will heavily subvert literature’s iconic heroine, positioning her not as a simple romantic prize to be won, but as the central figure entangled in a dangerous mystery and a dark, erotic supernatural love triangle.

Sweeney is gearing up to portray Katrina Van Tassel, the character who will actively drive the psychological intrigue against a heavily atmospheric, gothic backdrop. Sony is already fast-tracking the project, viewing it as a massive star-vehicle following Sweeney’s massive box office hot streak, which includes the global romantic-comedy hit Anyone But You and her recently celebrated psychological thriller The Housemaid.
The feature film stands as the very first official project under Sweeney’s newly launched independent production banner, Honey Trap. The actress will co-produce the film alongside Margot Robbie’s acclaimed production powerhouse, LuckyChap Entertainment, as the studio begins an incredibly highly watched industry casting call to find the right actors to fill out the legendary roles of Ichabod Crane and Brom Bones.
While Hollow is currently in active development at Sony Pictures and does not have an official theatrical release date just yet, fans can look forward to the source material’s launch, as Lindsey Anderson Beer’s novel is scheduled to be published by Putnam in the Fall of 2027. In the meantime, horror fans can currently stream Sydney Sweeney’s hit psychological horror film Immaculate on Hulu, while her acclaimed breakout series Euphoria is available in its entirety on Max.
For audiences wanting to check out classic versions of the headless horseman lore before the reboot drops, Tim Burton’s star-studded 1999 Sleepy Hollow adaptation starring Johnny Depp is available to stream on Paramount+.
