Jeremy Allen White reportedly won’t star in the Sgt. Rock DCU movie.
Luca Guadagnino — known for directing 2017’s Call Me by Your Name, 2024’s Challengers, and more — is currently working on a Sgt. Rock movie for DC Studios. It was initially reported that Daniel Craig was going to play the titular character in the movie; however, Craig dropped out of the project earlier this month.
“Reasons for Craig’s departure remain unclear,” The Hollywood Reporter reported. “Some said the actor’s schedule ran into roadblocks with that of his wife, actress Rachel Weisz. Other sources said that the actor soured on the role after Queer failed to perform not only at the box office, but also in the awards season race.”
James Gunn and Peter Safran recently said, via Deadline, that they never met with Craig about playing Sgt. Rock and that “he was never attached” to the role.
Following Craig’s reported departure, Jeremy Allen White’s name emerged as a frontrunner to take his spot. Jeff Sneider’s The InSneider reported that White held “the offer for Sgt. Rock,” though questions arose regarding whether or not he’d take it due to some potential issues with scheduling and salary.
What is the new Sgt. Rock casting update?
Now, according to Sneider’s The InSneider, White has passed on the Sgt. Rock role. His reasons for passing remain unclear at this time, though Sneider said it could be “because he didn’t want to be the second choice for his first major comic book movie role.”
No casting for the Sgt. Rock movie has been announced at this time. The film was seemingly looking to go into production this coming summer, though a release date has not yet been set. The script for the film is written by Justin Kuritzkes, who wrote both Challengers and Queer.
“What we love about Sgt. Rock is the opportunity to tell a story about heroism and conflict in a compelling and unique way,” Safran recently said. “Justin really wrote a wonderful screenplay, and that’s what catapulted that project to the forefront.”
