Tobey Maguire’s rendition of Marvel’s larger-than-life superhero, Spider-Man, has a cult following, even 23 years after the release of its first installment. Directed by Sam Raimi, the Spider-Man Trilogy stood out for its aesthetics, interesting narratives, and realistic fight choreography.
While the recent iteration of the web-slinging bad boy, delivered by Tom Holland, banked by Marvel, relied heavily on CGI and visual add-ons, Raimi’s artistry was based on realism. So much so that the 65-year-old filmmaker even tried to hire people to replicate the superhero’s iconic daring comic poses!

Everyone has an opinion on which iteration of Peter Parker’s crime-fighting alter ego – Spider-Man- is the best to ever swing onto the big screen. Young fans might go for Holland’s version, but the first depiction to bring one of Marvel Comics’ most iconic superheroes into the cinematic mainstream was Maguire’s portrayal.
The film received a wild reception from the audience, which encouraged the makers to push out two more sequels with more iconic shots and badder villains. Even critics lauded the action-packed trilogy, which some might consider to be among the all-time greatest superhero movies.

But there’s more to the picture than meets the eye. While the three-parter launched Raimi into the stratosphere, becoming a big-budget Hollywood filmmaker, his vision for Spider-Man was rather radical, strange, yet original. His minimalist approach to computer-generated graphics was a cornerstone in his school of filmmaking.

Even during the making of the trilogy, Raimi tried to hire stuntmen to replicate the iconic poses from Todd McFarlane’s Spider-Man comic covers instead of leaving it to graphic and motion designers. He simply threw anatomy out of the window for poses, wanting his superhero to look as cool as the original comic rendition of the character.

After Spider-Man 3, the studio left Raimi for the makers of The Amazing Spider-Man, roping in Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone as Peter Parker and MJ as part of its “Webb-Verse.” In 2021, we saw Holland reprising the role of the webslinger under Jon Watts’ direction.
While the latest movie in the franchise, Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021), garnered positive responses, the overuse of the green screen made it a tiring ordeal for old-school Marvel fans. Although Holland delivered an exceptional performance (like he always does), the cameos of Garfield and Maguire made the viewers go back and rewatch the old classics.

Holland’s movies had an obvious advantage over Garfield and Maguire: the character was playing around in a universe that had other heroes and villains as well. Introduced in Captain America: Civil War, the character had a lot more combinations than its previous storylines.
Whereas, Maguire was the key entity in his portrayal of the masked superhero. The plot, characters, and situations revolved around him. This gave the first trilogy a sense of authenticity and conviction.
Not to mention Raimi’s use of slapstick humor. His version of Spider-Man had comedy intertwined in the plot, making it more relatable and soothing rather than letting down the viewers with flimsy and bland situational humor.

One ardent follower shared his thoughts, praising Raimi’s effort to make it as raw as possible. He also noted that that kind of thinking is lacking in today’s cinema, with makers over-relying on visual effects.
And just like that, Holland’s Spider-Man sequel has kicked off filming in London, and it’s swinging its way toward theaters next year. It’ll be called Spider-Man: Brand New Day—because who doesn’t love a fresh start… especially when it involves webs, villains, and more emotional roller coasters?
