The Rick and Morty movie is closer to being a reality, as it has reportedly found its director. The news comes just a month ahead of the debut of its Season 9. According to the latest report, the animated movie is tapping a director who is well-versed in the series.
What is known about the Rick and Morty movie?
According to a report from Jeff Sneider, series veteran Jacob Hair is in talks to direct the animated film, which at the moment is being called the Rick and Morty movie. The film will reportedly be produced by Hair and Rick and Morty showrunner Scott Marder. As of the time of writing, no screenwriter has been attached to the project.
The report doesn’t reveal whether such a film would be released theatrically or just on HBO Max. Jacob Hair joined Rick and Morty in Season 4, working as both an episode director and supervising director for a total of 26 episodes in the series. Hair also has experience working on other animated projects, including Phineas and Ferb the Movie: Candace Against the Universe, Family Guy, and King of the Hill.

Plans for a Rick and Morty feature film began in 2019 when creator Justin Roiland expressed interest in making an R-rated feature. Since then, series co-creator Dan Harmon has also talked about being in discussions with Warner Bros. to make a 90-minute feature film.
According to Harmon, the film would not interfere with the continuity of the series, making it accessible to both new and longtime fans. Since then, Justice League director Zack Snyder has also thrown his hat in the ring to direct a Rick and Morty movie. Snyder would go on to make a cameo as himself on the show.
Rick and Morty stars Ian Cardoni, Harry Belden, Sarah Chalke, Chris Parnell, and Spencer Grammer, and is executive produced by Dan Harmon and Scott Marder. While a feature film adaptation is yet to be confirmed, Rick and Morty is officially getting a spin-off focused on President Curtis.
Rick and Morty Season 9 will begin streaming weekly on Hulu and HBO Max on June 15, 2026.
