Comic book writer and editor Gerry Conway – co-creator of Marvel’s The Punisher and DC’s Firestorm – has passed away. He was 73 years old.
Marvel’s website confirmed Gerry Conway’s passing today, in an article discussing his many contributions to the Marvel Universe. These included writing “The Night Gwen Stacy Died” and developing Carol Danvers into Ms. Marvel. The article also included a statement by Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige.
“Gerry Conway brought real stakes to his writing, able to weave together sensational super heroics with the human and relatable, and in doing so created some of the most memorable stories and characters of all time,” Feige noted. “His writing has been hugely impactful across our comics, but it has also inspired so much of what we’ve done on screen, from Werewolf by Night to Daredevil to Spider-Man and Punisher. Gerry was a wonderful collaborator and friend to so many and will be dearly missed.”
Other comic creators were quick to join Feige in honoring Gerry Conway. Deadpool co-creator Rob Liefeld shared a picture of himself and Conway, while discussing his accomplishments.

Writer Gail Simone likewise praised Gerry Conway, whom she recently honored with a story teaming his co-creations Punisher and Power Girl.
He did. We had several email discussions over the past few weeks. He was lovely and gracious. This hurts bad. He was a favorite writer and I had TWO tributes to him in comics in the past couple months, the crossover and a villain in UXM, both were to show my appreciation for his endless creativity.— Gail Simone (@gailsimone.bsky.social) 2026-04-27T16:58:39.353Z
Gerry Conway a legend at Marvel and DC
To describe Conway’s influence on American comics as huge would be an understatement. He wrote extensively for both Marvel and DC, having lengthy runs on both Superman and Spider-Man. It was for this reason he was chosen to write the first official intercompany crossover teaming the two heroes: Superman vs. The Amazing Spider-Man.

Apart from his work on Superman, Gerry Conway wrote Justice League for eight years. He also worked on Detective Comics for a time, where he co-created the second Robin, Jason Todd, and the villain Killer Croc. He also had a lengthy run on Wonder Woman.
Beyond his comic book work, Gerry Conway was also a prolific screenwriter for film and television. He co-wrote the animated fantasy Fire and Ice with frequent collaborator Roy Thomas, with whom he also worked on the story for Conan the Destroyer. His television credits include the shows Father Dowling Mysteries, Matlock, Law & Order, and two episodes of Batman: The Animated Series.
