Practical Magic 2 Soundtrack: Every Song in Sandra Bullock’s Magical Sequel
Spread the love

Practical Magic 2, Warner Bros.’ long-awaited follow-up to the 1998 cult favourite, is now in theaters. Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman return as sisters Sally and Gillian Owens. Susanne Bier directs the movie, with Joey King, Maisie Williams, Lee Pace, Dianne Wiest, and Stockard Channing joining the cast.

In the movie, the Owens women confront the dark curse hanging over their family. The music is just as much of a draw. Rupert Gregson-Williams, a composer whose range runs from Hacksaw Ridge and Wonder Woman to Aquaman, Bee Movie, and The Crown, handles the score.

Bullock was an executive producer on the film’s soundtrack album, as confirmed by producer Denise Di Novi in a PEOPLE interview. She shared about the soundtrack, “We really felt the pressure to have this movie use songs in the way that the first movie did.”

The movie is also a reunion for Bier and Gregson-Williams, who last worked together on The Perfect Couple. She shared about the artist, “His music has so much heart, but he’s also quite versatile, and this score needed to have both” (via Business Wire). She further shared that she loved the score and thought it was “gorgeous.”

Reviews have been mixed for the movie. In our review of Practical Magic 2, Sean Boelman of FW gave it a score of 6 and praised it for the “ineffable chemistry of Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman”, while criticizing the movie’s visual and narrative blandness.

The soundtrack album of Practical Magic 2 comes from WaterTower Music, the in-house label for Warner Bros. Discovery, and is out now on all major digital platforms. In addition, Licorice Pizza Records is also releasing a vinyl edition, which is now available for pre-order.

Three original songs sit at the front of the record, including Brandi Carlile’s cover of Billy Joel’s And So It Goes. Carlile recorded the song after a surprise FaceTime call from Bullock introduced her to the track. Bleachers worked on the track for the film, Caught Myself Believing.

Jack Antonoff called it a joy for Bleachers to get together and write something for the soundtrack. He shared, “I’m so glad the world gets a part two, and that Bleachers gets to play a small part in it.” Here are the three original tracks featured in the movie.

Everything after those three tracks is Gregson-Williams’ score, which runs 17 cues and carries the sisterhood theme that ties both films together. Here are the scores.

The needle drops are where the sequel really shows off. Stevie Nicks returns to the franchise with Landslide, the Fleetwood Mac classic she wrote and sang, which is a full-circle moment given that her song Crystal featured in the 1998 original. Olivia Rodrigo also turns up with The Cure, a track from her third album that she has called one of her favourites.

If You Ever Did Believe by Stevie Nicks with Sheryl Crow and This Kiss by Faith Hill both come straight from the original film’s soundtrack, and hearing them again does more emotional work than any amount of new material could. Elsewhere, the film leans joyful. Here are the tracks used in the movie.

Landslide by Stevie Nicks

The Cure by Olivia Rodrigo

Pata Pata by Miriam Makeba

If You Ever Did Believe by Stevie Nicks with Sheryl Crow

This Kiss by Faith Hill

Got to Give It Up (Part 1) by Marvin Gaye

Always on My Mind by Elvis Presley
