Disney has officially reopened negotiations with Johnny Depp to reprise his iconic role as Captain Jack Sparrow in the upcoming sixth installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. Longtime franchise producer Jerry Bruckheimer confirmed at the D23 Expo that the studio and creative team are actively talking with Depp and currently developing the screenplay.
In an interview with the Deadline, Bruckheimer said:
We’re talking with Johnny (Depp), we’re working on a screenplay, and hopefully we can get this done.
The move signals a major reconciliation between the studio and its franchise talisman following years of uncertainty. Rather than serving as another traditional Jack Sparrow adventure, the next installment is poised to introduce a brand-new protagonist portrayed by Margot Robbie, with Depp’s Sparrow potentially pivoting into a high-profile supporting role to pass the torch.

Insiders indicate that the long-gestating project is being envisioned as a creative evolution for the high-seas saga rather than a standard sequel. By positioning Margot Robbie at the center of the narrative, Disney aims to re-energize the franchise while preserving the eccentric charm that made Captain Jack Sparrow a pop-culture phenomenon.
The strategic reinvention comes as Disney looks to restore the franchise’s commercial glory. Spanning five theatrical releases, the Pirates of the Caribbean saga has grossed over $4.5 billion worldwide, making it one of the most profitable live-action properties in cinematic history. However, 2017’s Dead Men Tell No Tales brought home $795.9 million globally, finishing as the lowest-grossing installment since the original 2003 film. (Via Deadline)
By pairing an A-list newcomer in Robbie with the nostalgic appeal of Depp’s return, Disney can spark a massive theatrical resurgence.By striking a delicate balance between classic swashbuckling nostalgia and bold narrative reinvention, Pirates of the Caribbean 6 has the potential to honor its roots while charting a thrilling course for the next generation of moviegoers.
