Netflix’s new rom-com People We Meet on Vacation follows two longtime friends, Poppy and Alex, as they slowly realize their long-suppressed feelings for each other in a classic friends-to-lovers story. However, that realization doesn’t come easily.

It begins with an almost-kiss, one moment that changes everything, even though it doesn’t lead to the outcome either of them hoped for. The kiss is more than just a slip. It is the moment when their buried feelings finally surface, even though neither of them is ready to confront what it means.

Despite their deep bond, Alex (Tom Blyth) and Poppy have very different personalities. Alex craves stability, a home, and a clear future, while Poppy is drawn to travel, freedom, and a life without roots. These differences are what push them toward silence instead of honesty when it matters most.

That silence slowly turns into years of distance. Rather than addressing what happened on their last vacation, both choose to bury their feelings until they finally reunite and are forced to face the truth.

What Went Wrong Between Alex and Poppy in Tuscany?

Alex and Poppy’s friendship grows over the years of shared summer vacations after an awkward first meeting during a carpool ride home. Despite their differences, they find comfort in being fully themselves around each other, building a bond that quietly becomes deeper than friendship.

However, everything changes during their trip to Tuscany. For the first time, the vacation isn’t just about the two of them. Alex is dating Sarah, and Poppy (Emily Bader) is with Trey, and they decide to go on a double-date vacation. Unlike their usual carefree travels, this vacation is tense and uncomfortable from the start.

Trey openly brags about his nomadic lifestyle and love for constant travel, while Alex pushes back, making it clear he values having a stable home to return to. The conversation highlights the growing gap between what Alex wants and what Poppy’s life seems to represent.

Later that night, a shaken Poppy confides in Alex that she might be pregnant. Alex, as always, shows up for her, offering comfort and support. When the pregnancy scare turns out to be false, emotions take over. Overwhelmed by relief and adrenaline, Poppy proceeds to kiss Alex, but he pulls back.

When Alex asks what he truly means to her, Poppy panics. She pulls back, insisting he’s her best friend and saying she doesn’t want to ruin what they have. The next morning, Alex makes a drastic decision, and he proposes to Sarah. To him, it’s a choice for stability and certainty.

The final blow comes when Alex tells Poppy that Tuscany will be their last vacation together, knowing their friendship can no longer coexist with his relationship. Tuscany doesn’t just end a trip; it shatters everything they’d built together over the years.

Why Alex and Poppy’s Reunion in Barcelona Doesn’t Last?

After the Tuscany incident, Alex and Poppy remain out of touch for two years, until Alex’s brother David’s wedding in Barcelona. Poppy initially decides not to attend and even tells Alex she can’t make it. But she changes her mind and tells him she’ll be traveling to Barcelona for work.

The two reunite when Alex picks Poppy up from the airport. After some initial awkwardness, they quickly fall back into their old rhythm. Poppy learns that Alex and Sarah tried to make their relationship work but eventually broke up. Alex later invites her to the rehearsal dinner, where he discovers that Poppy isn’t actually there for work. But she cancelled her Greece assignment just to attend the wedding.

Later, Alex asks Poppy why she really came to Barcelona. She admits that she missed her best friend and wishes things could go back to how they were before they went to Tuscany. Alex finally confesses that he doesn’t want that and admits that he loves her, refusing to be just friends again.

However, Poppy was still not ready to talk about this and avoided the conversation, hoping Alex would say she wasn’t the reason his relationship with Sarah ended. Instead, Alex admits that she was.

Overwhelmed, Poppy breaks down but eventually confesses that she came to Barcelona to see him and has loved him for years. With their feelings finally out in the open, Alex and Poppy get back together.

However, their reunion is short-lived. Poppy wants to focus on the present and enjoy what they have in the moment, while Alex is more concerned about planning a future together. As they dance, Poppy insists on living in the now and leaving the real-life conversations for later.

Alex is unsettled by this. Realizing that Poppy is still unsure about what she wants from life, he decides to walk away from both her and the relationship, and the two once again part ways.

What Finally Made Poppy Choose Alex?

After the wedding in Barcelona, Poppy returns to New York still uncertain about her future. On the way home, she unexpectedly runs into Sarah, Alex’s ex-fiancée, who is now working as a flight attendant.

During their brief conversation, Sarah admits that she and Alex were never meant to be together. She also tells her that the life she once imagined for herself no longer excites her, which is why she chose to follow a different path.

That conversation stays with Poppy. Once home, she finally allows herself to slow down and confront her emotions. Although she always claimed to enjoy living without certainty, the truth is that every return home made her feel lonely, and that emptiness was beginning to show in her writing.

Poppy understands that she has been running from her feelings for Alex all along. What she truly wants is not endless travel, but a sense of belonging and stability. With that clarity, she resigns from her job and decides to return to Linfield, choosing to build a life rather than avoid one.

The finale of the movie follows Poppy visiting Alex at his home, only to see him on his regular runs. She rushes after him. When she finally reaches him, she admits her deepest fear of staying in one place. But she never felt that fear with Alex.

Rather, she had always wanted to be near him, even in her worst. Poppy admits that she was ready to plan a future with him because she couldn’t imagine her life without Alex in it, as she comes to the realisation that Alex was truly her home.

People We Meet on Vacation ends with Poppy and Alex starting a new chapter together in New York, continuing their adventures side by side, finally choosing each other.

How Netflix’s People We Meet on Vacation Differs from the Book?

Adapted by Yulin Kuang, Amos Vernon, and Nunzio Randazzo from Emily Henry’s 2021 book of the same name, People We Meet on Vacation changes several details while bringing Alex and Poppy’s story to life on screen. These changes are spread throughout the film, from Alex and Poppy’s first meeting to their final confession at the very end.

One of the biggest differences is how Alex and Poppy first connect. In the novel, they meet during freshman orientation at the University of Chicago and later carpool home. The movie skips this setup and jumps straight into a road trip from Boston College to Ohio.

Their reunion is also reworked. In the book, Poppy reaches out to Alex and suggests a vacation before he invites her to Palm Springs for his brother’s wedding. The movie swaps Palm Springs for Barcelona, with Poppy attending the wedding on her own invitation rather than planning the trip with Alex.

Several travel adventures and side characters from the book are trimmed down or removed altogether. The movie also changes the nature of Alex and Poppy’s fallout. Instead of a drunken hookup in Croatia leading to years of silence, the film centers initial tension among them around a tense couples’ trip to Tuscany and Alex’s proposal to Sarah.

Finally, the ending gets a classic rom-com treatment, with a dramatic run and public confession replacing the quieter resolution of the novel.

As with most book-to-movie adaptations, these changes reflect the challenge of condensing a layered, time-spanning story into a two-hour film while still capturing its heart.
