Many are already claiming that 2026 is the new 2016. And with Overwatch finally taking its throne back on Steam as the number one hero-shooter title over Marvel Rivals, this statement feels more true than ever.
The recent overhaul of the first-person shooter is the root cause behind this, which came along with a batch of freshly baked content that excited new players and veterans alike, making them come back. However, the biggest change to the game is dropping the “2” from the title, making it just Overwatch going forward, with the same name as the original game.

It had been a while since Overwatch was last relevant, but it has now finally surged back, marking its highest concurrent player numbers on Steam since launch and even overtaking the other big shooter titles on the platform, including Marvel Rivals.
Reaching a peak of over 165k+ players (SteamDB), this spike comes after Blizzard introduced the bold overhaul of the game, bringing new branding and seasonal content for players to enjoy.
As mentioned before, part of the campaign for this overhaul was dropping the “2” from the title, followed by the addition of five fresh heroes, revamped UI and progression systems, and the long-awaited Reign of Talon expansion.
As a result of this overhaul, Overwatch has seen its concurrent Steam player count climb sharply, even surpassing games like Marvel Rivals and Call of Duty in peak numbers. Furthermore, it would be only fair to assume that there were at least 200k players active during the peak, given that some use the Battle.net launcher and others are on consoles.
Why Overwatch Still Isn’t Out Of Danger Yet: Marvel Rivals, Deadlock And More FPS That Dominate

Despite taking over Marvel Rivals for a while, Overwatch still has a long way to go if it truly wants to beat the game that has been truly dominating the hero-shooter genre ever since it came out in late 2024. Being one of the major competitors of the shooter space, the game featuring heroes straight out of the Marvel Universe casually crosses a peak of over 100k players every single day, something Overwatch has only been able to achieve once.
There are also other shooters, from Deadlock to Valorant, competing for the limited number of players and their loyalty. Fortunately, Overwatch has been in the mix for a decade now, meaning it already has a close-knit community to carry the game and its player count.
It’s also important to consider that the Steam charts don’t show the whole picture, as many players still prefer console or Battle.net platforms, and their counts aren’t as readily available, making it hard to track popularity.
