A Stranger Things theory suggests that Vecna may not be the ultimate villain of the series. Instead, he could be a pawn for a larger force, Neothelid, a part of the Mind Flayer. In D&D, a Neothelid is a Mind Flayer tadpole that matures if left without a host for a long time. It consumes other tadpoles until it becomes large and powerful enough to be called Neothelid.
In Stranger Things Season 3, a fragment of the Mind Flayer leaves Will Byers’ body, begins to feed on humans and rats, and grows larger and more destructive. This creature is later referred to as the Mind Flayer.
In Season 5, Volume 1, we also receive a hint about the monster’s presence. While at the military base laboratory under the supervision of Dr. Kay, Hopper is attacked by a creature. It could potentially be a Neothelid egg or a body cage.
Is the Mind Flayer the Final Boss in Stranger Things?
In another new theory, the Mind Flayer could be the actual villain. The theory came into light from the franchise Broadway prequel, Stranger Things: The First Shadow. The play explores Henry Creel’s childhood, showing how he became Vecna. When Henry lived in Nevada, he entered a cave while playing, and there he was transported to Dimension X.
He first met the Mind Flayer in Dimension X, who eventually controlled him. The creature gave him powers and guided him, suggesting that Vecna was influenced from the start. This means the Mind Flayer existed before Vecna. It may have been shaping events behind the scenes, using Vecna as an agent.
The show was written by Kate Trefry and created by the Duffer Brothers. It ran on Broadway in New York and also opened in London’s West End. While these are two different franchises, we are not sure if the theory will be included in the series.
Did The Duffer Brothers Hint at Steve’s Death in Stranger Things?

While there are only a few days left for Stranger Things Season 5 Volume 2’s release, fans are dying to know the fate of Steve Harrington. Ahead of the release, The Duffer Brothers appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. They teased the show’s ending with Funko dolls. Unfortunately, it’s not a happy ending for Steve.
In the segment, they removed Barb’s doll from the table, placed Eleven in water, put Will on top of Henry, and Vecna on top of Will. And lastly, they dropped Steve’s (Joe Keery) doll from the table. That means he could face death in the finale.
Is this a foreshadowing? Eleven may face danger, Steve could be at risk of dying, and Will may play a pivotal role between the Upside Down forces. While the Duffers are known for playful misdirection, the setup adds only suspension.
With Mind Flayer potentially being the villain and characters like Steve and Eleven facing danger, the stakes have never been higher.
