With the release of the latest Nippon Sangoku Episode 9 on Prime Video on Sunday, May 31, 2026, the story shifts from a war-driven narrative to a more intricate and emotionally evocative strategy. The entire narrative centers on the retreat from Wajima, which affects both countries in different ways.

Personally, the animation felt slightly lower in quality compared to the previous episodes in the series. However, it did not shy away from highlighting the key moments of the episode that deserved emphasis. Without further ado, here is a recap and review of Nippon Sangoku Episode 9.

Spoiler Alert !!!This article contains spoilers from Nippon Sangoku Episode 9.

The After Effects of Wajima’s Retreat Linger Through Perspectives

Commander-in-Chief Ohga Wajima’s retreat in Nippon Sangoku Episode 8 may have seemed like a minor event, but the latest episode highlights its drastic consequences for both countries. Following the incident, Ryumon is brought back to Yamato on a stretcher, where he receives a heartfelt welcome from Kaku. However, Kaku suddenly collapses in the rain after Ryumon is taken away for further treatment.

On the other hand, the situation is far more serious in Seii. Wajima’s retreat from the bridge is seen as an act of cowardice and disrespect, prompting soldiers to call for her resignation. Wajima accepts the consequences and is prepared to sacrifice herself for the sake of the army. However, Seii’s strategist, Yayakichi Hei, has a plan to protect her position.

Yayakichi Hei’s Sacrificial Plan to Restore Wajima’s Position

To save Wajima’s position as Commander-in-Chief of the Seii army, Hei produces fabricated documents that portray himself as the mastermind behind everything. He spreads false claims about himself, from killing Wajima’s brother to orchestrating her retreat at the bridge. He makes it clear that it was all part of a scheme to weaken Ohga Wajima’s standing in the army and seize power as the new Commander-in-Chief, ultimately sacrificing himself as a scapegoat for her.

Hei goes even further by assembling a small group of Seii soldiers and attacking Wajima’s residence, killing one of the guards. However, once they are discovered, they immediately surrender, and Hei is captured as a traitor. Despite the pleas of others, and even Wajima’s inner conflict, Yayakichi Hei insists that he must be punished.

The final blow comes when Yayakichi Hei’s own son, Yasuke Hei, understands his father’s strategy and resolve and kneels to request his execution. Reluctantly, Yayakichi is publicly bound to a cross and speared to death by Wajima herself, bringing the era of a great strategist to an end.

Nippon Sangoku Episode 9 Final Verdict

Even though we say that Episode 9 wasn’t about war, it was more about war than we can visually see — the impact of Yayakichi’s death is definitely going to change Seii’s future movements in the war. I also have a feeling Yasuke is about to replace him. But what bugged me the most was the cliffhanger with Kaku, who collapsed out of nowhere in the rain. Was he dead or just unconscious?

Production-wise, the episode was well-balanced: nothing spectacular, yet nothing mid-quality. Yes, compared to every other episode of the series, it definitely felt less flashy, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it was a bad thing in this case. The episode was meant to be extremely emotional and strategic. I feel the subtle and dramatic lighting captured the essence perfectly.

Did you get a chance to watch the latest episode yet? If so, what are your thoughts on it, and what do you think will happen in the next episode? We’d love to hear your thoughts and opinions in the comments below.
