The Stranger Things fandom loves to cook up theories, no matter how wild they sound, and one of them connects Dustin to Vecna. According to the theory, Vecna/001/Henry is the real father of Dustin Henderson.

Now you might say this claim makes no sense at all, and in a way, you’re right! But there are a few signs that supported this theory until the recent Broadway show was released. So, let’s see why people believed Vecna was Dustin’s father, and why this suggestion has recently been proved wrong. 

Wild Stranger Things Fan Theory Connects Dustin to Vecna 

There are a few reasons, and maybe they’re even a bit silly, but they do line up convincingly. First of all, Dustin’s last name is Henderson, and the literal translation of that is “Son of Henry.” Throughout all the seasons, there’s been no mention of Dustin’s father.

But in season 4, when Vecna’s true identity was revealed to be Henry Creel, a handful of fans were quick to make assumptions. One fan on Reddit, though he meant it as a joke, said the bats did not harm Gaten Matarazzo’s Dustin in upside down and only took Eddie Munson’s life instead because of the same reason.

The user further claimed that it would be a major plot point in Season 5, where Dustin also gains power, similar to the ones in the D&D game. Now, we’ve already seen that happen with Will Byers, who unlocks Vecna’s powers and becomes the ‘Sorcerer.’ So, could his link to Vecna also explain why Dustin is as sharp as a tack? 

How the Broadway Show Debunks Dustin and Vecna’s Link

Believing this theory somewhat made sense up until season 4, but then we had Stranger Things: First Shadow, a play that first opened in 2023 and began its limited Broadway run in 2025. Finally, we now have an answer to Dustin Henderson’s actual parentage because the play is canon to the Netflix series. 

In Stranger Things, we’ve only ever met Claudia, Dustin’s mother, in a few episodes, and his father was nowhere to be seen or mentioned. But The First Shadow features Claudia and Walter Henderson as teens, when they’re dating each other. 

Walter Henderson is Dustin’s father, who once attended Hawkins High and was also a part of Joyce’s school play, alongside Claudia. The Henderson family had a liquor store when Walter was a teenager, but we do not know what happened to the couple after the events of the play ended in 1959. 

So, there you have it, Henry Creel, aka Vecna, is not the actual father of Dustin. But do you think the Duffer brothers could find a workaround and still surprise us?
