In the anime world, some stories are so big that starting them can feel like a mission of its own. One Piece is one of them. However, Netflix’s THE ONE PIECE is now confirmed to be different from Toei Animation’s long-running anime.
Wit Studio president and CEO George Wada has explained that the new series will be a “reboot,” not a remake of what was already adapted by Toei, giving longtime fans and newcomers a fresh way to experience Eiichiro Oda‘s story.

THE ONE PIECE will tell Luffy’s story again, but it will not simply copy what Toei Animation has already done. Speaking to Mantan Web Japan, Wada explained that the original manga has moved much further since the anime first began.
Because of that, creators now have a better understanding of the characters, the world, and the story’s later developments. According to Wada –
While Toei Animation has been producing wonderful anime for many years, the reason we’re taking on this new project is to reach people all over the world who haven’t yet experienced the work. We’re not attempting a ‘remake,’ but a ‘reboot.’ ONE PIECE has also seen great success with its live-action drama on Netflix, showing a wide reach. We’re aiming to break through barriers and spread it to the world, including those who haven’t been exposed to it before.
This statement alone makes the project interesting. The original anime has had more than 25 years to build its own identity, but Wit Studio can go back to Oda’s actual manga and decide what deserves the most attention.
Season 1 is expected to cover around the first 50 manga chapters (via @theop_official on Twitter/X), taking the story through Luffy’s journey to the Baratie and his meeting with Sanji. Wit Studio is also a major part of the appeal. The studio is known for anime such as Attack on Titan and SPY×FAMILY, so THE ONE PIECE gives it the chance to put its own visual style on one of the biggest manga series ever created.
THE ONE PIECE Could Make Luffy’s Journey Easier To Follow
The original One Piece anime has plenty of filler, but the bigger issue is that even canon material can sometimes feel stretched. Dressrosa, for example, became well known among fans for its slow pacing. Later parts of the anime have faced similar complaints. The current Elbaf arc is also adapting around one manga chapter per episode. That can work for important chapters, but when there is not enough material, an entire episode can feel like it is moving at a snail’s pace.
THE ONE PIECE has a chance to fix that. Because Wit Studio is starting fresh, it can probably combine shorter chapters, give major moments more room, and avoid stretching scenes just to fill a weekly broadcast schedule. It can also keep filler to a minimum and stay closer to Oda’s original pacing.
Then there is the animation. New fans are entering anime with increasingly high expectations, and THE ONE PIECE can give them high-quality visuals from Episode 1 instead of asking them to watch hundreds of older episodes before reaching the later animation style.
That is why the reboot label matters. The anime is scheduled to premiere worldwide on Netflix in February 2027. For longtime fans, it could be a fresh trip back to East Blue. For newcomers, it could be the easiest way yet to start Luffy’s adventure.
