Damon emphasized that, unlike the episodic nature of the James Bond films, the Bourne franchise relies on a continuous, linear narrative, making crafting a fresh yet familiar sequel an incredibly difficult creative challenge. He said:
It’s tough … it’s not built like a James Bond where every movie is its own mission … it’s a linear story. It makes it more challenging to do a sequel where you’re giving people what they want, but also enough new stuff.
Damon highlighted the core storytelling obstacle that has kept the franchise dormant since 2016’s Jason Bourne. He explained that the series cannot simply swap out actors or assign the character a random standalone mission like 007.
