When Marvel initially ended their association with the Netflix shows, many felt the Defenders Saga was done for. Things changed for the better after Charlie Cox’s Daredevil was introduced in the MCU, and after a creative overhaul on the small screen, the MCU brought back many favorites, including Karen, Punisher, and Kingpin.

Although it was unclear for a bit whether Born Again was a soft reboot or the continuation of the Netflix series, last year, one Marvel executive confirmed the Defenders saga is indeed canon, and their future is looking bright.

After struggling to fit their big screen formula to the small screen, the MCU adopted the traditional approach to TV, similar to that of the Defenders saga. Moreover, Daredevil: Born Again was the first MCU show to adopt this approach, which will feature the return of Charlie Cox‘s Matt Murdock and Jon Bernthal‘s Punisher.

As for the rest of the Defenders? Brad Winderbaum, the head of Marvel’s Streaming, Television, and Animation division, previously canonized the events of the Netflix shows. Although he confessed that they lack the unlimited storytelling freedom of the comics given the scale of TV productions, on the bright side, Winderbaum revealed they’re very much playing with the prospect of exploring them.

He added (via EW):
Obviously, we don’t have the unlimited storytelling resources like a comic book, [where] if you can draw it, you can do it. We’re dealing with actors and time and the massive scale of production in order to build a cinematic universe, especially on television. But I can just say that all those variables taken into account, it is certainly something that is creatively extremely exciting and that we are very much exploring.
Krysten Ritter, in particular, has embraced the possibility of returning as Jessica Jones, and hopefully, her Marvel return will be sooner than later.

Moving ahead, per Winderbaum, Marvel will be leaning toward multiple seasons for TV shows, starting with Daredevil: Born Again. He assured fans, “One hundred percent it’s a multi-season show.” However, the Marvel executive further added, “I don’t know how many seasons it’ll run,” which makes sense as Cox’s current commitment to the MCU only includes the first two seasons.

At the end of the day, it’ll come down to the quality and its reception among fans, and considering Cox is down for a prolonged journey in the MCU, it’s safe to say the Defenders are just getting started in the MCU.
Daredevil: Born Again will premiere on Disney Plus on 4 March 2025.
