Mahershala Ali waited for a good seven years to star in Marvel’s reboot of Blade. However, after the announcement that the reboot is no longer happening, the Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother actor has opened up about his candid take on it.
The cancellation caps off one of the most turbulent production histories in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Over the course of seven years, Blade saw two directors, Bassam Tariq and Yann Demange, walk away from the director’s chair. Furthermore, at least five different screenwriters attempted to crack the script as the story cycled through multiple historical and modern eras before landing on the back burner.
Addressing the project’s demise, Ali expressed a desire to focus on original, impactful storytelling rather than lingering on unfulfilled remakes. He said during an interview with GQ:
When I look at what is for me, is it was either this or that — and I’ll take this. No offense to them. I’ve been doing this professionally for pushing 30 years now, and one thing I’ve learned is that what is for you is for you and what is not is not. For whatever reason, that project is not for me. If they wanted to do it, we would’ve done it. So I have to move on, and I have moved on.
Ultimately, the end of Mahershala Ali’s Blade serves as a poignant reminder that even the brightest stars and biggest studios cannot force creative chemistry into existence. While it remains bittersweet to see a master actor step away from such an iconic antihero, Ali’s graceful exit opens the door for his talents to shine elsewhere. While Marvel fans may never see Ali don the iconic leather trench coat in a solo feature, the vampire hunter’s legacy still lives on in cinematic history.
