A legendary actor who rose to superstardom from his role in the Lord of the Rings movies has thrown his hat in the ring to play Voldemort in the upcoming Harry Potter television series.

What LOTR star would be a great choice for Voldemort in Harry Potter?

In a recent interview with Josh Horowitz, Andy Serkis — who played Gollum in the Lord of the Rings films and subsequent spin-off movies — was asked about potentially playing the role of Voldemort. Serkis joked that he was fully in on playing it and was just “waiting for the call” to do so. Serkis also noted that filling the shoes of Ralph Fiennes, who played Voldemort in the Harry Potter movies, would be a tall order for anyone.

While Serkis’ comments came somewhat jokingly, he actually would be an incredible fit for the role. Serkis is an accomplished actor in his own right, but more importantly, has already performed in two roles that saw him completely transform himself. Outside of Gollum, Serkis also starred in the Planet of the Apes reboot series as Caesar in a performance that earned him critical acclaim for his ability to act and embody a completely different person, or in this case, an entirely different species.

While playing Voldemort won’t require Serkis to go to the lengths that playing Gollum or Caesar required, it is a more physical role than people think. Voldemort obviously looks unlike a human, but at least in the way Fiennes portrayed, didn’t act fully like one either. His motions and exaggerations were extreme throughout the movies, and an over-the-top villain isn’t something Serkis is unfamiliar with playing, as his role in the MCU as Klaw has shown us.

It’s unclear who will play Voldemort in the upcoming movie as of now, but should Serkis get tapped to play the role, he would be an excellent addition to an already star-studded cast.
