Spoiler Alert !!!This article contains spoilers from One Piece manga.
One Piece manga is nearing its end, and the power scaling debates have never been more intense. Since Loki’s proper introduction, the community is torn over a specific comparison: Is Loki actually stronger than the newly crowned Yonko, Luffy?
A recent thread on the r/OnePiecePowerScaling subreddit has been fighting over exactly this, with the original poster claiming that Luffy would absolutely beat Loki even at Gear 4. Many fans are examining the facts and concluding that the Straw Hat captain is being severely underestimated, while others are claiming he is being overestimated.

In the Reddit post, u/AgentHibachi00 claimed that even Gear 4 is enough to end Loki, and Gear 5 would simply be an overkill:

The skepticism around Loki’s strength is mostly due to the context of his imprisonment. “If that strong, why chained?” While Eiichiro Oda has shown him as a legendary giant, fans are pointing out the power levels of other major characters in the manga.
Luffy has already defeated Kaido, who was supposedly the strongest in the sea. For many, this places Luffy at the pinnacle of power, making any current antagonist, other than Imu, an underdog by default unless proven otherwise – and Loki is not exeption.
In the recent chapters leading up to Chapter 1172 (which unfortunately was a recap chapter), it was revealed that Gaban, the former left hand of the Pirate King, entrusted Luffy with the key to Loki’s chains. Possibly, this wasn’t a desperate gamble, but a calculated move.
Gaban likely understands that Luffy possesses the strength to handle Loki if he goes on a rampage. If Loki were truly an unstoppable force capable of ending the world, Gaban, a veteran who knows the heights of Roger and Whitebeard, would never have risked releasing him.
Luffy Is Used to Standing Back Up
While the post made a bold claim, most fans in the comments disagree. The main claim of the other side is that this is not the first time Luffy claimed something like this.

For example, how Luffy claimed he could fight Big Mom, but he had to run away in Wano. u/JadeDream1 mentioned how this is the case in most arcs, until Luffy gets a new power-up after being defeated the first time. The fact is, Luffy himself has died multiple times.
Some users also point out how it’s not limited to battles. Luffy has claimed many things that never happened:

The debate ultimately circles back to the narrative and structure of the entire One Piece manga. Monkey D. Luffy is here to become the Pirate King; that is the plot, but Loki is a significant obstacle. Comments on the post seem convinced that the first battle will likely result in Loki’s win. But that can’t stay the case forever, considering how the story has worked so far.
However, when Luffy does win, which he will, it will be a battle with great struggle, and not as easy as the original post pointed out.
