Least-Favorite Star Wars Villain Didn’t Show up Much in Clone Wars for 2 Reasons

In the build-up to the new Star Wars series, Maul – Shadow Lord, Dave Filoni has come out to address why the titular big bad’s master, Darth Sidious, had such scarce appearances in The Clone Wars and Rebels series. The recently appointed President of Lucasfilm listed two major reasons behind his limited usage of the iconic Star Wars villain in the said animated shows that encapsulate the Republic’s downfall, as well as the Empire’s subsequent rise to power.

Dave Filoni reveals why Darth Sidious was rarely used in Star Wars: The Clone Wars

The veteran filmmaker recently explained why Darth Sidious, AKA Chancellor Palpatine, only made a handful of appearances in the Clone Wars and Rebels shows.

“There’s always a technical reason, like making the [cloth simulation] on his cloak, making that look good and believable wasn’t something we could do in early seasons. Sidious was going to largely remain a hologram,” Dave Filoni noted in a new video uploaded by Star Wars’ official YouTube channel. He further reflected on Darth Maul’s journey as a character over the course of two shows.

Filoni additionally stated that he did not want to mess with any character that was essential to the narrative George Lucas established in the original and prequel trilogies. “I didn’t feel that it was necessarily important to tell too much story about Sidious in The Clone Wars, given that’s George’s main villain in his films,” he remarked. “So, you always have to be careful when you’re using these characters that are important to the storyline of the films that you’re not changing things, that you’re not changing who they are.”

Having worked on The Clone Wars and its sequel series, Rebels, Dave Filoni is on track to debut his third animated series in the Star Wars franchise. Titled Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord, the upcoming show takes place after the events of the Clone Wars. Moreover, it will follow Darth Maul as he sets out to revive his criminal syndicate. The 10-episode series is all set to premiere on Disney+ on April 6, 2026.
