Kirsten Dunst has thrown her hat in the ring for the potential sequel to A Minecraft Movie, which (as of writing) remains the biggest box-office hit for WB this year (via Box Office Mojo). While Dunst has spent much of her career prioritizing artistic roles, which have earned her years of critical acclaim in the Indie space, the Melancholia star is ready to branch out.
Part of the appeal? She told Town & Country that her kids loved the Jack Black-led movie, and there’s also the lucrative paycheck.
Maybe I can just make a movie where I don’t lose money?
Considering the video game adaptation commenced WB’s impressive run at the box office this year, a sequel with Dunst could prove to be financially rewarding for both parties.

The Minecraft movie isn’t the lone IP that Dunst has showcased interest in when it comes to heavy hitters at the box office, as The Beguiled star also entertained the prospect of chiming back into the realm of superheroes.
While she has spent most of her career prioritizing art, evident from her immaculate filmography, being a mother of 2, who also looks after her mother, Dunst told GQ she’s open to CBMs for the lucrative paycheck.
You get paid a lot of money, and I have two children, and I support my mother.
Although she has been honest about not liking CBMs, Dunst, in the same interview, said she’d have returned in No Way Home if asked, adding that she’d love to explore the Peter/MJ dynamic in a new light.
It would be funny to be like, OK, let’s take Tobey [Maguire] and I and do it in a weird indie way where it’s like a different kind of superhero film. Like how they did that movie Chronicle. It could be cool.
Hopefully, Secret Wars, which will reportedly conclude Tobey Maguire’s legacy as Spider-Man, will bring Dunst into the mix for the endgame.
Is A Minecraft Movie Sequel Happening?
While WB is ready to pump the gas on original features after a year full of original hits (which it should), this isn’t to say A Minecraft Movie will be a one-and-done deal. Given the movie’s $955M collection, it’s safe to say the execs will shortly greenlight another entry.

Moreover, director Jared Hess previously told Deadline there are already some talks about the potential sequel, adding:
I would have a blast doing the sequel, and it seems like there’s already talk about it happening, so I’m super excited. It’ll be so much fun to go back into the world. The fans are just having such a good time. We teased it in the end credits, and the fans seem to be going wild for it.
It makes sense, as unlike Barbie, whose success relied on the chops of an auteur, the Minecraft IP is immune to lukewarm reception, as seen with the 2025 movie.
Would you love to see Dunst return in CBMs again? Let us know in the comments.
A Minecraft Movie is available to stream on HBO Max (USA).
