Japan Officially Removes Iconic Gundam Statue, Ending a 9 Year Old Tourist Pilgrimage
Spread the love

In the Gundam world, some machines become famous for their powers, while others become landmarks in the real world. The life-size Unicorn Gundam in Tokyo managed to do both in its own way.

For almost nine years, the giant RX-0 Unicorn Gundam stood outside DiverCity Tokyo Plaza in Odaiba, becoming a popular stop for Gundam fans and tourists visiting Japan. Now, that long run is coming to an end, as the official exhibition closes on August 31, 2026 (via the official website).

The Unicorn Gundam Is Leaving Odaiba After Nine Years

The life-size Unicorn Gundam first appeared in Odaiba in September 2017. Standing at 19.7 meters, the giant statue recreated the RX-0 Unicorn Gundam from Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn on a massive scale.

The RX-0 is one of the most famous mobile suits in the Universal Century timeline. In Gundam Unicorn, it can switch between Unicorn Mode and Destroy Mode, with its Psycho-Frame technology playing an important role in its abilities.

The real statue brought that transformation to life in a way that anime fans could actually see. Its head, shoulders, waist, and other parts could move during special shows, while lights, video, and music made the experience even more impressive.

That is also why the statue became more than just a giant figure outside a shopping center. For many Gundam fans, visiting Odaiba and taking a picture with the Unicorn Gundam became part of a trip to Japan. Now, after nearly nine years, that experience is ending.

The official Final Ceremony took place on August 29 at 7:30 PM JST and was streamed through the official Gundam Channel on YouTube. The event featured a special performance by Hiroyuki Sawano, who worked on the music for Mobile Suit Gundam UC, Mobile Suit Gundam NT, and Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway, along with singer SennaRin.

But the ceremony was not the final moment for the statue. The Unicorn Gundam will remain on display through August 31, with its final scheduled nighttime show running at 9:30 PM JST.

Gundam Turns the Final Days Into One Last Fan Celebration

The final days of the statue have also turned into a full celebration for fans. From August 22 to August 31, a special program called “UNICORN GUNDAM Statue – BEYOND POSSIBILITY” is being shown at 8 PM JST. Other video and light shows are also running throughout the evening.

The farewell has even reached Gundam merchandise. A special 1/48 Mega Size Model of the RX-0 Unicorn Gundam Ver. TWC FINAL recreates the life-size statue and includes special decorations by mecha designer Hajime Katoki. The model is priced at 14,300 yen ($89.33 approx).

Fans can also pick up special T-shirts, mugs, acrylic keychains, towels, and stickers featuring the final version of the statue. STRICT-G has also released exclusive Unicorn Gundam products for the occasion. DiverCity Tokyo Plaza and nearby Gundam Base locations are joining in as well. Special displays look back at the statue’s history, while fans can leave messages for the giant mobile suit before it disappears.

Even the Gundam Cafe food truck has joined the farewell with special Unicorn Gundam shaved ice and giveaway headbands for fans who want one last photo with the statue.

Meanwhile, the biggest question now is what comes next. Odaiba previously had the life-size RX-78-2 Gundam before the Unicorn Gundam replaced it in 2017. There is no official confirmation that another life-size Gundam will take its place, but the idea would certainly give fans something new to look forward to.

For now, though, the Unicorn Gundam is getting the goodbye it deserves. After standing over Odaiba for almost nine years, one of Japan’s most memorable anime landmarks is finally preparing to leave. Now the big question: Would you like to see another life-size Gundam replace the Unicorn in Odaiba? Share your thoughts in the comments section below.
