Is Dear Killer Nannies Based on a True Story? All We Know About Juan Pablo Escobar

Hulu’s Dear Killer Nannies has captivated audiences with its dark, intricate plot and morally complex characters. But many have wondered if the show is just another serialized glorification or based on real life. Well, fans of true crime would love to know that it is, in fact, based on a true story with real insights.

Released on April 1, the show is the latest project as the fascination with the life and legacy of Pablo Escobar continues. However, this time, the show is told from another perspective.

While the title might suggest a stylized thriller, the DNA of the show is inextricably linked to the real-world experiences of the Escobar family, particularly the insights provided by Pablo’s son, Juan Pablo Escobar. Unlike the usual dramatization of one of the most ruthless drug lords, it centers on Juan Pablo’s life and the ‘killer nannies’ assigned to take care of him.

Who are Juan Pablo Escobar Henao and Sebastián Marroquín?

Juan Pablo Escobar, who now goes by the name Sebastián Marroquín, is the son of the infamous Colombian drug kingpin, Pablo Escobar. Born in 1977, he grew up in the shadow of his father’s criminal empire, which brought immense wealth, violence, and controversy (via CNN).

After his father’s death in 1993, at 17 years of age, Juan Pablo Escobar faced the tragic realities of being the son of one of the world’s most wanted criminals. The family had to run away after Escobar’s death and found refuge in Buenos Aires. This is when he changed his name.

While Escobar was known for his ruthless crimes and being a heartless drug lord, to his family and son, he was a devoted husband and a loving father. Juan grew up in extreme wealth. He lived in Hacienda Napoles, a ranch that had over 27 artificial lakes, three zoos, a gas station, and over 1700 employees, and more. At 13, he owned multiple motorbikes, his own bachelor pad, and more (via CNN). Yet, behind the tender image of his father, he also knew of his crimes from 7 years of age after.

While Escobar never wanted his son to follow in his footsteps, he didn’t change his ways either. When he died, the family had to deal with the repercussions of the crime empire and the image they had inherited.

As the founder of the Medellín cocaine cartel, Pablo Escobar had a net worth of $30 billion at one time. Despite his ‘Robin Hood’ acts of giving to charity and the poor, he was responsible for the deaths of several Colombian government figures, as well as civilian deaths, including an Avianca Flight 203, which claimed the lives of 107 people (via Biography.com).

In an interview with CNN, Marroquin remarked how he has to live with both versions of his father since he cannot help but love him, for he was an excellent father.

Most Pablo Escobar-centric media, such as Netflix’s Narcos, focus on the glorification of his life. Focusing more on law enforcement chase, the high-level politicians, and the violent spectacle of the cartel, these projects more often than not fail to capture all aspects of the King of Cocaine’s life.

Gunned down on a Medellín rooftop after a failed escape plan by the Colombian police in 1993, Escobar was a larger-than-life figure whose life has not been presented in totality in the media. Dear Killer Nannies attempts to correct this. The series shows him through the lens of his son, Juan Pablo Escobar Henao, or Sebastián Marroquín.

In an interview with the Latin Times, creator Sebastián Ortega explained how the series is told from the point of view of a child. But it is not just about Juan’s view of his father, but also about his transition from a child to a teenager and coming to terms with his father’s violent ‘side.’

Juan himself revealed to the Latin Times why he believes this story needed to be told.

I had already gone through books, documentaries, and a lot of stories about my father, and I felt this was the moment to tell my personal story, Juan Pablo’s story, the story of the child, the little boy, and the teenager, and the decisions and traumatic moments I went through. I felt I had the opportunity to tell a very different perspective on my father’s story.

Juan, who has given several interviews, written books, and participated in biographies, and more, in an attempt to depict a more accurate version of his father. In Dear Killer Nannies, the focus is on the hitmen his father entrusted to look after him while also dealing with survival, trauma, and the pain of the people who suffered.

Ortega also added that, given the glorification of Escobar, this story deserved to be told, not in an attempt to soften his image, but to show how disturbing it is.
