Idris Elba to portray Okonkwo, in Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart

British actor, Idris Elba, is set to portray Okonkwo, the protagonist in Chinua Achebe’s classic novel, ‘Things Fall Apart,’ in a new TV series adaptation by American entertainment company, A24.

The series adaptation is still in its early stages and has yet to secure a streaming service or network.

‘Things Fall Apart’ is the story of Okonkwo as one of literature’s most iconic characters—a fearless African warrior and leader who is resolute about preserving his people and culture. As British colonisers disrupt his world, Okonkwo’s struggle to maintain power and tradition spirals into a heart-wrenching confrontation. His fierce resolve, a fatal flaw in the face of unstoppable change, makes him an unforgettable character, embodying the tension between strength, vulnerability and adaptability.

Elba will serve as executive producer alongside Gina Carter under their 22Summers production banner.

David Oyelowo and Amanda N’Duka will also executive producers through Yoruba Saxon, while Ben Forkner, Dayo Ogunyemi, and Achebe Masterworks will join as additional executive producers.

Things Fall Apart was first adapted as a movie in 1971 and later as a mini-series in 1987, with renowned Nigerian actor, Pete Edochie, playing Okonkwo, the revered wrestling champion of Umuofia.

As much as Idris Elba does not fit the profile of an Igbo man to play the role of Okonkwo in “Things fall apart”.
We need to come off the mentality that our story is for only us. Things fall apart was widely translated and now with social media global relevance is becoming important. I have also come to change the mentality that roles should be played by those whose culture it is originally.
An Idris in that story will give it bigger prominence than any other person I can think off. If we are happy they are singing our songs and speaking our language why should we be angry they are playing our role? We celebrate our people playing roles in Hollywood yet not happy for others to play our own.
As long as he can translate to role well then no problem my only problem is that Idris is too push to play a village man. Except it will be adapted to a different setting.
The world is a small village now.
