Secret Invasion star Dermot Mulroney has been in the film and TV industry for more than three decades. Starting his career in the late 80s, he was in the era when many younger actors got the chance to make it in the industry and took it. The actor has worked in many shows and films such as My Best Friend’s Wedding, F.R.I.E.N.D.S, New Girl, and more.

The actor has the advantage of being in two defining eras in Hollywood, one during the formative years of today’s classic stars and the present era. Hence, the actor gave some advice for younger actors who hope to pursue fame in the industry, warning about the dangers that come with it.

Dermot Mulroney’s Breakthrough And Career

Dermot Mulroney in Young Guns

Despite not being one of the biggest stars in Hollywood, actor Dermot Mulroney seems to be quite happy with his current state of stardom. He is not big enough to be typecasted nor is he small enough to be ignored. Mulroney started off in the 1980s when fresh faces were in demand in Hollywood. The success of teen comedies such as The Breakfast Club and St. Elmo’s Fire had led to many young actors being cast in leading roles.

Hence, Mulroney found his first role in a TV film after only four months of auditions. The actor apparently had not considered acting and hoped to become a cameraman after studying film at University. He said in an interview with The Guardian,

“I was convinced that it was a waste of time, a pipe dream, and not worth any actual attention or effort – I wasn’t about to do that. Two minutes later, I was signed…Once I got signed, I thought: ‘I’m really going to do this, and I’m going to do it forever – I’m going to make sure I don’t blow it.’”

Mulroney’s breakthrough role came in the form of the Western Young Guns. It starred Mulroney along with Charlie Sheen, Kiefer Sutherland, and Emilio Estevez. The film was a commercial success, earning over $56 million against a $11 million budget. The actor mentioned that his time during filming was a great experience and the cast frequently went on benders. He said,

“We were all drinking voraciously in a way that I don’t think young actors do today. I think that took on some legendary status. [We soon learned] who could handle their liquor, handle their scandals like Charlie Sheen, climbing over a balcony, kind of half-clothed …”

While the actor starred in a number of films later, he is still known for his romantic comedies My Best Friend’s Wedding and The Wedding Date. He became a household name after starring in a few episodes of the sitcom F.R.I.E.N.D.S and New Girl.

Dermot Mulroney’s Warning Against Fame

Though Dermot Mulroney says that he was handpicked for fame during the 80s, he is still not as big as some of the other young actors who gained traction at the time. However, the actor mentioned that he did not have any regrets related to it. He said in an interview with The Guardian,

“I had a fair shot at the welterweight belt, I took a few on the chin and I’m still in the game – so I couldn’t be happier. I could have made more money. But I couldn’t give a damn about being more famous.”

Mulroney remembers how many stars who grew up around fame and around the industry have been messed up by it. In The Guardian interview, he mentioned the likes of Lindsay Lohan who were victims of the pressures of the industry. He said,

“So many people still have so much time to recover from the pressure. But it’s been devastating, devastating, to watch…Corey Feldman and those guys, just younger than my generation, were horribly abused by this industry. It was all the 70s sitcom kids, who were so horribly used up. How many made it out alive, not to mention sane? I don’t know what to do, but I can’t watch it anymore.”

Dermot Mulroney then went on to advise the younger generation to be ready for the type of scrutiny they would be privy to if they decided to pursue fame.
