Director Christopher Chulack has credited one episode of ER for George Clooney bagging the role of Batman. In a recent interview, Chulack revealed that the actor’s performance in a 1995 episode of the hit medical drama played a crucial role in his casting as the superhero.

Christopher Chulack says George Clooney became Batman because of an ER episode

Christopher Chulack revealed that George Clooney’s performance in an episode of ER directly led to his casting as Batman in 1997’s Batman & Robin.

Speaking to TV Insider, Chulack explained that the ER episode titled “Hell and High Water,” which aired in November 1995, played an important role in Clooney’s transition to movies. The episode featured Clooney’s character, Dr. Doug Ross, heroically rescuing a young boy trapped in a flooded storm drain. The dramatic episode had captivated around 45 million viewers.

Chulack said, “So I knew that the show was already a hit. That episode got 45 million viewers.” In the interview, he recalled that the overwhelming response to the episode caught the attention of Warner Bros. executives. He explained, “The next day, Bob Daley and Terry Semel, who were the presidents of Warner Bros. Television, came down and knocked on George’s dressing room door and told him, ‘You’re going to be the next Batman because of the heroism of that episode.’”

The director added, “So I figured it’s just going to go up from here, and it did.” It became one of ER’s most acclaimed episodes, earning six Emmy nominations and securing Chulack a Directors Guild of America Award.

Following the episode’s success, George Clooney was cast as Bruce Wayne in Joel Schumacher’s Batman & Robin. He joined a star-studded ensemble that included Uma Thurman, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Alicia Silverstone, and Chris O’Donnell. However, the 1997 superhero film received mixed reviews and underperformed critically.
