Shooting Season 2 before Season 1 even debuts might sound unusual, but it is a deliberate strategy by HBO and Warner Bros. Discovery. HBO chief Casey Bloys previously noted that the studio wants to avoid massive multi-year gaps between seasons. Because the core cast starts out so young, rolling cameras quickly prevents child actors from visibly aging out of their roles. (Via Collider)
This early start directly tackles J.K. Rowling’s second installment, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. Rather than waiting for viewership data on the premiere, HBO is moving straight into the darker sophomore chapter that sees Harry, Ron, and Hermione confront the terrifying mystery of Salazar Slytherin’s hidden beast petrifying students.
To keep the momentum going, Succession writer Jon Brown has joined showrunner Francesca Gardiner to co-lead the second season. Adapting one novel per season will allow the creative team to flesh out beloved background characters such as Harry’s Gryffindor Quidditch teammates Oliver Wood, Katie Bell, Alicia Spinnet, and Angelina Johnson far more deeply than the two-hour theatrical films ever could.
