In the Gundam universe, having special abilities can make a pilot dangerous, but not every great pilot needs them. Across the many Gundam timelines, several pilots have reached the top through training, experience, sharp instincts, and sheer determination.
They may not have Newtype abilities or their universe’s equivalent, but they can still make even the strongest mobile suits look terrifying. With that said, for this ranking, we are focusing on their piloting skills rather than simply ranking the strongest mobile suits they used.
10. Ramba Ral Proved Skill Can Make Up for Any Mobile Suit

Ramba Ral is one of the first pilots in Gundam to show just how dangerous an experienced Oldtype can be. In Mobile Suit Gundam, he arrives with the Gouf and quickly becomes a serious problem for the White Base crew.
His battles with Amuro are especially important. Amuro is already becoming a much better pilot, but Ral’s experience allows him to stay competitive and put real pressure on the Gundam. However, he takes the 10th spot because the pilots above him have either achieved more impressive victories or shown a higher level of adaptability.
9. Sergei Smirnov Was a Veteran Who Could Take on Gundams

Sergei Smirnov brings years of military experience to Mobile Suit Gundam 00. He is not a special human with strange powers. He is simply an extremely capable soldier who knows how to fight. That becomes clear whenever he faces Celestial Being. Gundam technology gives the enemy a huge advantage, yet Sergei never comes across as helpless.
His calm decisions and battlefield awareness allow him to survive situations where many ordinary pilots would have been overwhelmed. He ranks above Ramba Ral because he operates in a much more advanced era of mobile suit warfare and remains effective against machines that are far ahead of his own.
8. Anavel Gato Earned His Fame as the Nightmare of Solomon

Anavel Gato is one of the most famous Oldtype pilots in the Universal Century. Before the events of Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory, he had already earned the nickname “Nightmare of Solomon” during the One Year War.
He is not simply someone sitting inside a powerful machine; he knows exactly how to use it. Gato lands at number eight because the next pilot has one of the greatest single combat showcases in the franchise.
7. Norris Packard Made His Gouf Custom Look Unstoppable

Norris Packard does not need dozens of episodes to prove his ability. His final battle in Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team is enough to make him one of Gundam‘s most memorable pilots. In Episode 10, Norris takes his Gouf Custom into battle against the Federation forces.
He destroys multiple Guntanks and then faces the 08th MS Team in a fight that remains one of the best examples of pure mobile suit skill in the franchise. Norris ranks above Gato because his famous battle feels like a showcase of pilot skill from beginning to end. There is very little wasted movement, and even his final defeat does not make him look weak.
6. Ali al-Saachez Was One of Gundam‘s Most Ruthless Aces

Some pilots fight because they have a mission. Ali al-Saachez fights because he enjoys it. That makes him one of the most dangerous ordinary humans in Mobile Suit Gundam 00.
His battles against the Gundam Meisters show that he is not simply relying on better equipment. Ali knows how to exploit an opponent’s mistakes and attack when they least expect it. He ranks sixth because his experience and adaptability put him above the older ace pilots below him.
5. Graham Aker Pushed His Flag to Its Absolute Limit

Graham Aker might be one of the clearest examples of a pilot making an ordinary mobile suit look special. When Graham first encounters the Gundams in Mobile Suit Gundam 00, his Union Flag is nowhere near their level. Yet he refuses to simply accept that difference. He modifies his Flag and keeps looking for ways to fight them.
Graham’s speed, reactions, and understanding of his machine allow him to challenge opponents with a massive technological advantage. That is why he ranks fifth. He does not simply have a powerful machine carrying him through battles. He understands his machine so well that he can make it perform far beyond what most pilots could manage.
4. Heero Yuy Was a Deadly Pilot Long Before the Gundam

Heero Yuy is one of the most dangerous young pilots in the franchise, and his skills were already impressive before he ever climbed into a Gundam. Mobile Suit Gundam Wing establishes this almost immediately. In Episode 1, Heero survives the failed descent of Wing Gundam and continues with his mission as if nothing happened.
His training covers far more than mobile suit combat. Heero is skilled at infiltration, weapons, hand-to-hand combat, computers, and surviving situations that should be impossible. His later use of Wing Zero and the ZERO System only adds another layer to his abilities. He ranks fourth because his versatility gives him an edge over Graham.
3. Yazan Gable Became a Monster Without Newtype Powers

Yazan Gable is perhaps the best example of a Universal Century pilot who refuses to be left behind by Newtypes. Throughout Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam, Yazan fights some of the strongest pilots involved in the Gryps Conflict.
His strength comes from experience, physical ability, aggression, and an excellent understanding of combat. He is also willing to fight in ways that make him extremely difficult to predict. Yazan reaches number three because his entire career in Zeta Gundam is proof of how far an Oldtype can go.
2. Domon Kasshu Turned Martial Arts Into a Fighting Style

Domon Kasshu is obviously very different from the other pilots on this list. Mobile Fighter G Gundam does not have Newtypes, but Domon still possesses abilities that make him far beyond an ordinary fighter. His years of martial arts training are directly connected to the way he controls his mobile fighter through the Mobile Trace System.
His movements become the movements of the God Gundam, turning martial arts into actual mobile suit combat. Domon takes second place because his physical and combat abilities are extraordinary even by Gundam standards.
1. Asemu Asuno Became Gundam AGE‘s Ultimate Super Pilot
Asemu Asuno is the perfect choice for number one because his greatest weakness becomes his greatest strength. In Mobile Suit Gundam AGE, Asemu is tested and found to lack X-Rounder potential. While other pilots can rely on this special ability, Asemu has to find another way to keep up. And he does.
His rivalry with Zeheart becomes one of the best parts of the Asemu arc. Asemu eventually earns the name “Super Pilot,” and his time with machines such as the AGE-2 shows why. He learns from every battle and develops a style that belongs entirely to him. That gives him the number one spot.
