Guillermo del Toro’s highly anticipated adaptation of Frankenstein with 77% Rotten Tomatoes score, inspired by Mary Shelley’s classic 1818 Gothic novel, is finally on the horizon. Frankenstein stars Oscar Isaac as Victor Frankenstein, Jacob Elordi as the Creature, and Mia Goth as Elizabeth.

The movie has been in the works for over a decade. It marks del Toro’s first feature-length release since his 2022 stop-motion film Pinocchio. The movie had its world premiere at the Venice International Film Festival on August 30. With the release of the movie, reviews have started coming in.

Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein: Rotten Tomatoes Score

As mentioned, currently, Frankenstein holds a 77% score on Rotten Tomatoes from 22 reviews. While it’s still considered “Fresh,” the score is a far cry from the rapturous praise some had expected for del Toro’s long-anticipated project.

The Rotten Tomatoes score is likely to fluctuate as the movie continues its limited theatrical run before its Netflix debut. Audience reviews are not yet available, but the movie’s release will undoubtedly generate more buzz.

The movie has been widely lauded for its production design, operatic spectacle, and its performances. Deadline’s Pete Hammond offered a more positive take, highlighting del Toro’s ability to add humanity to the story. The review said, “It is hard to imagine any other filmmaker who could bring the Gothic spirit to this property better than this one.” He commends del Toro for turning the story into “a fascinating and thoughtful tale on what it means to be a human, and who is really the monster?”

Variety points out that del Toro’s empathetic approach to monsters, seen in his earlier movies like The Shape of Water but Frankenstein, “feels less revolutionary” here.

The Hollywood Reporter’s David Rooney called it “one of del Toro’s finest, this is epic-scale storytelling of uncommon beauty, feeling, and artistry.” It highlights that the movie honors the essence of the book.

With that, fans’ expectations are now high to see del Toro’s take on such a well-known story. Fans who appreciate del Toro’s previous movies like Pan’s Labyrinth and The Shape of Water have to wait for a few more days.
