Nigeria’s Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved a budget of ₦158 billion for the procurement of electric vehicles in the country’s north-east region. Vice President Kashim Shettima announced this development during a recent meeting with a delegation from the Harvard Kennedy School.
This initiative is part of the North East Development Commission’s (NEDC) efforts to enhance transportation infrastructure and promote cleaner energy solutions in the region. The project includes the introduction of electric vehicles, tricycles, and the establishment of charging stations. The NEDC has conducted a thorough analysis and concluded that electric vehicles are better suited for the region, with plans to create modular solar power units across states to provide a reliable power source for these vehicles.
The electric vehicle fleet will comprise three categories:
-
E-Buses: Designed for intra-state movements with a minimum capacity of 40 passengers per trip.
-
E-Taxis: Capable of carrying three people, including the driver.
-
Modified Tricycles: Enhanced to accommodate eight people, including the driver.
This initiative aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s directive to promote cleaner energy and reflects Nigeria’s commitment to adopting sustainable transportation solutions.
