One Piece – one of the most popular anime series of all time, with a plethora of characters that defined and revolutionized the shonen anime genre for decades. When going through the characters of the series, Roronoa Zoro is a recurring name that stands as a pillar in the narrative, from being Luffy’s first mate to walking the path to become the strongest swordsman in the world.

Zoro has some of the most intriguing and character-defining fights in the series, and you have every right to know which ones they are. Without further ado, here are all of Roronoa Zoro’s fights from the One Piece anime series, ranked by impact and magnitude.

13. Hyouzou Was Just a Placeholder to Test Zoro’s Timeskip Training

Let’s be honest, the Hyouzou and Zoro fight on Fish-Man Island can’t really be called a fight, because Zoro completely dominates it. If this were pre-timeskip Zoro, there was a chance he would’ve really struggled against Hyouzou’s poisonous blades.

However, the Zoro that faced him was post-timeskip Zoro, who trained under Dracule Mihawk. The fight felt more like a showcase than anything; a showcase of what Zoro had learned and how much he went from Zero to Hero.

12. Zoro’s Intimidation Was Bigger Than Haki Against Monet

This was less of a fight and more of a one-sided domination by Zoro. The moment Zoro struck Monet without even unsheathing his blade, Monet was completely frightened, and the battle was pretty much over.

Zoro just did a quick run, sliced Monet in half, and walked away as if nothing happened – talk about aura farming. This was one of his coolest moments in the One Piece series early on, where he showed that the Color of the Supreme King is not the only thing that can intimidate others.

11. Zoro Did the Unthinkable by Making Quick Work of Hody Jones

Zoro vs. Hody Jones was one of the intriguing fights down this list, because it actually felt like a fight. Despite having a massive disadvantage underwater and Hody constantly overwhelming him with his barrage of attacks, Zoro finds an opening and delivers a fatal “Shishi Sonson”.

What makes the scene memorable isn’t just the victory, it’s what it represents: the Straw Hats had evolved to a completely different level after the timeskip, and Zoro had become strong enough to dominate enemies even in conditions that are unfavourable to him.

10. Pica Was the Giant Dressrosa Villain Who Tested Zoro’s Battle IQ

Coming to the Dressrosa Arc, this was the first time the Straw Hat Pirates faced challenging foes after the timeskip, against the Donquixote Pirates. While every fight was a spectacle on its own right, the fight between Zoro and Pica was a clear showcase of the former’s battle IQ.

Zoro spends most of the fight chasing a mountain-sized stone giant through Dressrosa before finally unleashing one of the largest sword slashes in the series. What makes the feat even more iconic is the fact that this essentially established Zoro as a top-tier swordsman capable of cutting anything – something which was known of only Mihawk till that point.

9. Zoro vs. Killer: A Fight That Favored Neither Side

The Zoro vs. Killer fight was a brief but intriguing segment in the earlier Wano Country Arc narrative. Neither Zoro nor Killer (disguised as Kamazo) was at their best; Zoro was already fighting against Onimaru and missing Shusui, while Killer was mentally broken and forced to work under Orochi.

What makes this fight peak is the part when Zoro receives a fatal blow from one of Killer’s scythes. However, Zoro just bites the blade and performs his signature three-sword style “Onigiri” to defeat Killer, using his own scythe.

8. Kaku’s Fight Unleashed Zoro’s Dangerous and Lethal Asura Form

The Zoro vs. Kaku fight was when things really started to get over-the-top. While Kaku was a strong fighter, the fight was choreographed quite well; his sudden transformation into a giraffe really served as comic relief in the sequence. However, we all know that’s not the reason we remember the fight.

The fight became a milestone in Zoro’s character arc and was mostly notable for his Nine Sword Style, Asura form. Not only did we get a cool new form during the fight, which caught us off guard, but we also got to see just how adaptive Zoro is mid-battle.

7. Zoro vs. Ryuma: His Clash of the Cursed Blades With the Undead

No one can deny that the Thriller Bark Arc was pretty underwhelming, with just a handful of sequences that shone through the monotonous arc. The fight between Zoro and Ryuma was one of them for sure, especially because of the massive payoff in the end.

Ryuma’s calm precision forces Zoro into a more disciplined battle than usual, which makes it seem heavier and narratively significant. What made it worth watching was the payoff delivery when Ryuma handed Zoro his Shusui, one of the Cursed Blades, after the Straw Hat swordsman defeated the legendary samurai’s spirit.

6. Fighting Hatchan Showcased the Already Strong Zoro as a Monster

Before fighting Hatchan in Arlong Park, Zoro had already established a reputation for himself as a strong swordsman in the One Piece-verse. But after fighting the Fishman, Zoro cemented his status as a monstrous swordsman, someone to definitely watch out for.

Zoro enters the battle still heavily injured from Mihawk’s attack and somehow defeats a six-sword fish-man underwater specialist anyway. What makes it even more remarkable is the reaction from Arlong and the others; even the enemies couldn’t believe his skill and power.

5. Zoro Standing Tall Against Lunarian Supremacy With His King Fight

Facing King in the Wano Country Arc is arguably Zoro’s hardest challenge in the anime series as of the time this article was published. King constantly overwhelms him with speed, durability, aerial attacks from his Ryu Ryu no Mi, Model: Pteranodon Devil Fruit, and Lunarian abilities that Zoro struggles to understand.

The turning point comes when Zoro fully embraces Enma and unleashes Advanced Conqueror’s Haki – the ending to the battle is explosive and earned rather than sudden or a handout. The fight was pure swordsmanship against the supremacy of the Lunarian race.

4. Kuma Triggered the Famous “Nothing Happened” Moment for Zoro

This might be one of the single most iconic and memorable moments of Roronoa Zoro that will remain an evergreen classic – the “nothing happened” moment. This wasn’t really a traditional fight scene, but it definitely deserves to be up here.

After the crew is completely exhausted, Bartholomew Kuma gives Zoro an impossible choice: either take all of Monkey D. Luffy’s pain and suffering or watch everyone die. Zoro chose the first one. This was a defining moment in his character’s arc, showing his loyalty and endurance – Oda achieved something with this scene that many anime series could not achieve in that short amount of time.

3. Zoro Slashing Kaido’s Defenses Was a Surreal Moment From Wano

While this might easily be overshadowed as one of the shorter Zoro fights in the series, what he did at Onigashima that day was one of One Piece‘s most surreal moments from the Wano Country Arc. As Kaido was about to finish off an exhausted Luffy, the loyal crewmate Zoro stepped in between Kaido and Luffy.

Not only did Zoro fight off Kaido, but he also managed to land a lethal slash on the former Yonko, which was so surprising that even Kaido couldn’t believe it. Although Zoro faints in the end, that was one of his most respected and powerful showcase moments in the series.

2. Meeting Mihawk Carved the Ultimate Path for Zoro in One Piece

Zoro vs. Mihawk from One Piece | Credits: Toei Animation

This was it – the single most important moment of Zoro’s life, getting slashed and defeated by “Hawkeye” Dracule Mihawk. That day, Zoro’s journey truly began, with a single goal in mind: to defeat Mihawk and become the strongest swordsman in the world.

Furthermore, before his encounter with Mihawk, Zoro was more or less set to follow Luffy’s Pirate King goal and assist him as a crew member – but after Mihawk, he himself finds a goal which leads to every other moment mentioned on this list; this was the origin of everything.

1. Zoro vs. Daz Bonez: A Fight That Cemented Zoro as a Serious Threat

Zoro vs. Daz Bones from One Piece | Credits: Toei Animation

Even though Mihawk’s fight set the path for Zoro’s journey in One Piece, his fight against Mr. 1, Daz Bonez, of the Baroque Works was the true defining moment of his crossing his first hurdle. With the powers of the Supa Supa no Mi Devil Fruit, Daz Bonez was basically a Full-Body Bladed Human, completely made out of metal.

The moment when Zoro, after many futile attempts, was finally able to shash him – it changes the perspective on his personality forever. The atmosphere, the desperation, the philosophy behind swordsmanship, and the payoff of finally cutting steel all combine into the perfect Zoro battle.

Here are some FAQs on the list:

Which is Zoro’s most significant fight in the One Piece series?

Zoro’s first fight with Mihawk will remain as one of the most significant fights for him.

Who taught Zoro swordsmanship during the One Piece timeskip period?

During the timeskip, Zoro was training with Mihawk on Kuraigana Island.

Does Zoro wield Cursed Blades?

Not entirely. Out of Zoro’s current three-sword style, only the Sandai Kitetsu is officially classified as a Cursed Blade (Youtou). The Wado Ichimonji is a “pure” masterpiece that belonged to his childhood friend Kuina and carries no curse. Meanwhile, Enma is often mistaken for being cursed because it dangerously drains the wielder’s Haki; however, lore-wise, it is simply a “fickle” blade of extremely high quality that requires a master to tame it, rather than a cursed weapon meant to bring misfortune.
