The Star Trek franchise is one of the few sci-fi IPs that focuses less on adrenaline-pumping action and more on diplomacy. Gene Roddenberry’s hopeful vision for the future was founded on less conflict, more curiosity, and peace between opposing forces. In fact, the creator’s insistence on less conflict reportedly drove writers crazy.
However, no world is without conflict, and the Star Trek franchise had many. The nature of Starfleet’s interstellar travels meant that it would come in contact with alien worlds and cultures, thus needing diplomacy and alliances for various governance reasons. The world of Trek also had wars, and deep alliances definitely saved the ‘good side’ from defeat.
Here are all the interstellar alliances in the Star Trek franchise, ranked based on how powerful and impactful they were.
8. The Temporal Accords

Time travel has not just been invented in the Star Trek universe, but also been widely used and has become a political tool. However, there were rules in place for the world to use it. The Temporal Accords were a treaty signed by multiple planets and organizations, stating that they would not use time travel to change the past.
While most agreed, there were several defaulters, leading to the Temporal Cold War. The existence of the war makes the coalition of the Temporal Accords one of the weakest alliances. The Federation had to intervene and make several attempts to keep time travel in control, and it was only banned in the 32nd century.
7. The Xindi Council

The Xindi Council is the only alliance between the five remaining species of the Xindi race after a civil war destroyed many of their people. The council was formed to search for a homeworld for their species, thus making them come into contact with Starfleet.
However, they are controlled and easily manipulated by the Guardians, a group that initiated the alliance. They were introduced in Star Trek: Enterprise.
The Xindi Council is weak because they only care about one thing: seeking a homeworld for its own species. While it is a noble endeavor, this makes them extremely distrustful towards others, and every decision is viewed through that lens. They are also easily influenced by the Guardians, who do not have their best interests at heart.
6. The Ferengi Alliance

The Ferengi were introduced as the villains in Star Trek: TNG, but had a larger role in Deep Space Nine and Voyager. The Ferengi are a capitalistic race of aliens who are known for their greed and business minds. The Ferengi Alliance governs all Ferengi species across the universe and regulates all business dealings made by the Ferengi.
Like other alliances that only keep the group’s vested interest at heart, the Ferengi alliance is extremely weak as the members are always in a quest for power. The culture encourages greed and power hunger, and hence, they are not trustworthy. Though some Ferengi later became part of Starfleet (like Nog from Deep Space Nine), they are still outside the Federation.
5. Cardassian-Dominion Alliance

Cardassia experienced major casualties during the Dominion War. The Klingons’ attack on Cardassia caused severe casualties, and they eventually joined the Dominion. Things changed drastically when Cardassia decided to ally with the Dominion in the war, spearheaded by Gul Dukat.
The alliance was strong, as Cardassia was a swing state of sorts and could have been a major threat to the Dominion had the Federation done a better job in controlling the coup. Dukat’s disappointment with the Detapa Council also led to them joining the Dominion.
The Klingon-Cardassian war was a huge moment preceding the Dominion war, and the alliance was a significant advantage to both. However, the Cardassian Rebellion played a huge part in crushing this alliance, and though it was quelled, the reluctance of many Cardassians ultimately made the Dominion lose the war.
4. Dominion-Breen Alliance

The Dominion-Breen alliance was a significant win for the Dominion in the war, as the Breen had the energy-dampening weapon, which was a huge threat to Federation ships.
Despite the Breen initially conflicting with the Dominion (they even had a Breen prisoner), their alliance became a huge loss for the Federation, and for a moment, it seemed like the odds were not in their favor.
However, the Breen alliance was an indirect cause of the Cardassian Rebellion, as the Dominion negotiated to give Cardassia as a colony to get the Breen on board. While the alliance was strong and greatly changed the tide of the war, it inadvertently caused the Dominion to waste significant resources and lose the war.
3. Klingon-Federation Alliance

Klingon-Federation relations were strained from the beginning as the former was not ready to join the UFP. Things changed during the Khitomer Accords, a treaty that brought the two powerhouses together for the first time. It was an incredible union as both were huge powers, and an alliance instead of conflict would keep the universe’s destruction at bay.
However, the alliance has not been all great since then. They briefly broke during the Dominion War, as the Klingons waged war against Cardassia despite warnings from the Federation. However, they eventually came back together, with another important alliance leading to their victory.
2. Federation-Klingon-Romulan Coalition
The Federation-Klingon-Romulan coalition won the Dominion War as it was one of the largest military alliances in the universe. For a while, it seemed like the Federation had lost the plot and the Dominion would emerge victorious after manipulating many other planets into allying with them (mainly the Breen and Cardassia).
However, Benjamin Sisko’s morally grey espionage action goaded the Romulans into joining a war they had previously remained neutral on. The combined force of three of the most powerful organizations was enough to put Dominion back in its place. The Cardassian Rebellion also came in at the right time for the Dominion to be severely weak in resources.
1. United Federation of Planets

Among all the alliances in the Star Trek universe, the United Federation of Planets is by far the strongest. In Star Trek: Discovery, it was revealed that the Federation once had more than 350 member planets at its height and was one of the largest coalitions in the universe. But more than their strength in numbers, it is their principles that make them the strongest.
The Federation’s foundation lies in the principles of liberty, justice, equality, peace, and progress. All the rules and regulations, such as the Prime Directive, are built around the principles of peace and liberty, ultimately leading to a more harmonious first contact between them and alien worlds.
The Federation has stumbled morally many times, especially during the Dominion War. However, there were some necessary evils that they had to do to win the war, which again is morally grey in actions. Still, the Federation has stood strong, with Starfleet constantly maintaining peace between multiple planets and placing diplomacy above conflict.
