Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca has admitted his side will not meet Chelsea’s 5pm deadline to sign Enzo Fernández, casting major doubt over the possibility of a reunion with his former midfielder.

Chelsea had informed City they must match their £120 million valuation before the end of Friday, August 14, 2026, otherwise the Argentine midfielder will remain at Stamford Bridge for the rest of the transfer window. Speaking ahead of Sunday’s Community Shield clash with Arsenal, Maresca made it clear no late move is expected before the deadline.

He said,

“Not today, to be honest. I don’t think we’re going to do something today,” Maresca said, while adding that any further business will depend on possible player departures ”

City’s interest in Fernández is linked to the uncertainty surrounding Rodri’s future amid Barcelona’s pursuit of the Spain international. However, Maresca refused to discuss players contracted to other clubs and insisted his focus remains on preparing his team for the new season.

The Blues are looking to settle the future of Enzo Fernández before the 2026/27 season begins, which was the reason why they gave Manchester City a deadline.
