Hollywood veteran Ed Harris nearly walked away from Paramount’s record-breaking Yellowstone spinoff, Dutton Ranch, after feeling severely misled about the size and importance of his role. Speaking candidly on the Monday night premiere of Apple TV’s The Dink, the Oscar-nominated actor disclosed to Variety that he was promised a leading spot as one of the show’s four primary characters before signing on. He said:
Prior to signing on for it, I was talked to quite a bit about what the season was, and what my character was going to do — and that I was one of the four main characters. And that wasn’t really the case.
As production on the first season progressed, Harris felt his character, veterinarian Everett McKinney, was reduced to a minor presence, prompting him to tell his team halfway through filming to get him out of his contract.

The breaking point for the actor, Harris, came when a key scene featuring his character singing at a bar was completely cut from the second episode because producers deemed it “too up for the dark ending of that episode.” He explained the situation and said:
So there’s this scene in there … I’m talking to [Beth Dutton] at the bar, and [Rip Wheeler] comes in and says, ‘OK, Everett, come on, it’s your turn.” I walk up to the mic, and they cut it. They cut the song out. I’m going, ‘F**k you, people.’
The decision infuriated Harris, who felt it was grounds to void his deal entirely. After voicing his frustrations to the production team about feeling “underused and inconsequential,” he ultimately agreed to stay. Producers have assured him that Everett will have a meatier storyline when Season 2 production begins.
The series stars Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser, who reprise their fan-favorite Yellowstone roles as Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler as they establish new operations in South Texas. Joining them in lead roles are Oscar nominee Ed Harris as local veterinarian and Navy veteran Everett McKinney, and Oscar nominee Annette Bening as Beulah Jackson, the formidable matriarch of the rival 10 Petal Ranch.
